The black leather seats in my '15 Limited are some of the worse I ever had in any vehicle. The leather is pretty stiff and just doesn't feel right. The second and third row seats are fine, it's just the front two.

Either way...The leather is coated so conditioning won't do anything. You can apply a conditioner everyday if you want to and it won't change a thing. You can't condition plastic. The best thing to do is keep them clean. I hit mine every couple of months with a dedicated leather cleaner, but usually just maintain them with any kind of "all in one" leather care product. Lately I've been using mothers vlr, but I've also used poorboy's leather stuff and the chemical guys leather detailer. I like the spray products cause I can knock it out pretty quick.

That means what you actually like is the vinyl

I have read that the leather seats in vehicles today have a very thin vinyl coating. That being the case, what is a guy to use to protect your seats?

Is it okay to use an interior protectant like ArmorAll with UV protection?

I use Leatherique, its a long process..

Basically I vacuum the seats, then hand rub in the rejuvenator let it sit for 24 hrs, then look for spots that have soaked in the rejuvenator, reapply those spots and let it sit for a few more hours.

Then I use the cleaner to get all the excess off the seats with a soft brush and microfiber towels.

I just did it to my Expedition and my wifes Explorer when I detailed and Kamikaze ISM coated them.

They come out soft, clean and look brand new.

There is a really good video by Esoteric Car care about Leatherique.

Some parts of the seats are actually vinyl, like the back. There is better quality leather, used in some and leatherette. I had my front seat recovered and shop used one vinyl piece. It was the upper, back rest on the edge. The guy said it will last longer and wear better. It matched perfect, to leather. So I would say, Ford Truck leather is cheap leather.

I love Leatherique and I've used it for years. But, my detailer recently educated me on the fact that 99% of newer vehicles have finished leather with a protective coating on it. Even though this coating is said to have "pores" conditioners don't penetrate it. Thus, using Leatherique conditioner may be a waste of effort.

If you have a King Ranch, though, you should definitely use leather conditioner. Those seats are aniline leather and don't have a protective coating on them. They'll dry out if they aren't conditioned regularly.

From what I've researched, the best way to preserve finished leather is to keep it hydrated. Water will penetrate the pores, so wipe it with a damp cloth one a week. Don't soak it, but let it get damp. Also, be sure to keep dust and dirt off it as well.

I think using Leatherique Prestine Clean might be a very good overall approach. It should hydrate the finished leather while also cleaning and protecting the vinyl and plastic parts. Since much of our seats is actually matching vinyl (in the third rows it's like ALL vinyl -- even on some Navigators) it can be hard to tell whether the part of the seat you're working on is really leather or not.

From what I understand, anything with silicone in it will make your seats slippery. Silicone is so slick almost nothing will stick to it. It can also be hard to remove. So, if you ever need to paint or refinish interior parts, it could be much more difficult once they've been treated with a silicone-based product.

Your right, the 3rd row of my wife's explorer didn't soak in any of the Rejuvenator but all 3 rows of mine did and the front two of hers did. She has the 2 tone black and brown seats.

Okay, with all that has been said about the seats in our Expeditions I'm still looking for an answer as to what, if anything, are we to use on these leather seats (excluding the KR) to protect and condition them?

Unfortunately, according to some professional detailers you *can't* condition non-KR "finished" leather. To protect it, keep the dust and dirt off it by vacuuming weekly. To preserve the material, wipe it down with a damp cloth once per week to keep it well hydrated.

For the matching vinyl and plastic parts, those *will* require regular monthly treatments of a protectant to keep the solvents in them from evaporating. I like Leatherique's Prestine Clean. Others will have their preferences. I tend to go with stuff professional detailers would feel comfortable using.
