I couldn't find that this has been discussed.
Ford Expedition 2016.
About 150K miles.

For the last couple of weeks, my wife has reported that it studders when accelerating. I started driving it to better understand the issue.

This is what I have found.
It will do fine driving under about 45-50mph on flat roads.
When accelerating to interstate speeds, it will start to have random RPM fluctuations, lose power, and then if I don't let up on the acceleration, the mechanic wrench comes on. If it I let off on acceleration, then I can continue at a constant speed, but can't accelerate further.

If I go into Manual mode, I can accelerate without an issue.

I don't use manual mode often, but it seems that you can control when it shifts, but if it wants to shift down, then it will still do so without my input. It won't shift up without my input.
If I am highway speeds, if I shift down and keep RPMs higher, then there is no problem.

If I start to go up a hill in manual mode and don't shift down, it will try to shift down on its own, and then will have the same issue described above with fluctuating RPMs and no power. If I quickly let off the gas and shift down manually, I can stop the issue and continue driving.

I have a code reader. The first time I read the codes, I had a P0741. Torque Converter Clutch.
I spoke with someone who used to work in the Ford service department, and he said the solenoids are often a problem. Specifically the torque converter solenoid.
Interesting, I cleared the code to see if it threw it again when the problem happened and it hasn't triggered any codes.

As I looked into if I could replace the solenoid myself (which I determined I can't within my tools, skills, time) there were discussions that often multiple solenoids start to go out at the same time. People recommending replacing them all at once as most of the labor was getting to them in the first place.

I will take it in to a transmission shop, but am always hesitant of mechanics wanting to do a much bigger job when it might be something simple.

To me, it seems much more like a sensor issue and the solenoid would make sense if shifting manually before it otherwise wants to shift bypasses the issue.
Anyone have this issue? Any thoughts? Thank you.

There was another incident of this a day or two ago.

If the wrench light stays on you have a powertrain fault and should get it to the dealer while it can still get there on it's own before it goes into limp mode and requires a tow. If the light goes off again there are still codes in the ECU. Or so says my (and your) owner's manual.

I would consider checking or changing or swapping your coil packs... I had a very similar problem with my 2014... It only happened twice... On acceleration at highway speed it would hunt for either 3rd or OD and shuddered in between as it couldn't decide based on load because of a failed cylinder... Never got the engine light but every once in a while driving local slower speed and stopping for a traffic light I could feel a VERY slight misfire... I'm guessing a slightly fouled plug... I shifted manually keeping the revs high for that day and the problem has not returned since... That was a year ago ! 93k all original no changes to plugs or coils... Give it a shot and maybe try some injector cleaner... BTW I only run e85... Worth a shot Oh just to mention another STRANGE problem... Stupid me left my radio on with the liftgate up listening to tunes till I went to leave... Dead Battery... then MANY tries from a battery jiffy jump starter... click click click, finally jump started from a friends vehicle... It would NOT shift up from 1st gear!!! Drove home 20mi... Battery now charged, disconnected battery in driveway and problem solved ! Must have confused the OB Comp... WEIRD !!! Good Luck !

Mis-fire issue, scan for codes and check for coolant by rear plugs. Most mis-fires are a spark plug issue. Get it fixed or you may ruin your cats.

Yes I understand about un burnt fuel clogging up a cat but the misfire/hunt issue only happened once about a year ago same time I felt that almost un noticeable misfire at idle... No issues for over a year... so I'm guessing whatever fouled the plug burned off the electrode... Late spring I will start searching for plugs and coils for a good price... It's too cold now and my back is not what it used to be for bending over the fender... Starter motor went last week. That bare jumper braid burned through without any indication or previous trouble... Drove somewhere at night came out no start... Did all the old tricks, banging, swapped relays, heard the click down below... Towed home and changed starter... That 3rd bolt is a Mo Fo ! AND it must have been changed by the Ford Dealer from the previous owner ! It was a Certified Sale... That third bolt was only half way in !
It was the Nippondensu Starter... Do you know if the standard starter is an option for next time if it ever occurs ? OR should I just stick with a Nippondensu should it happen again? Lying on my back in a NY December 28th winter is no fun for an older Motorhead ! Gotta tell ya... Funny part was there was a little sticker on the OEM starter I pulled out... "FoMoCo" you get where I'm goin with this one I'm sure.... Happy New Year !

My 2013 with just over 150K miles is acting similar. What's funny to me is it only happens when we go to California (I live in Utah). We went down there in April for a cruise and it would shudder occasionally when shifting. I thought maybe it had something to do with it being hot after driving it 10-12 hours, but when we got back from the cruise, same issue, so then I'm puzzled - Elevation maybe? We haven't had any issues with it since we got back to Utah.

Fast forward to last week and we went back down to Cali for a vacation and the same thing starts happening. We drove it around quite a bit more and noticed the issue more. I'm wondering if it is due to driving in California traffic which is quite a bit heavier than what we are typically driving in. When we steadily accelerate, we have no issues. But if we get into heavier traffic and start coasting or slowing down, then punch it to accelerate or change lanes to pass someone, we get the shudder/studder/hard shift. It happens most when the coast-to-acceleration change happens around 50 mph. Does that sound like the same issue you are having? I'm a youtube mechanic at best, and I'm not sure if this is something I need to take to a regular mechanic or a transmission place? If it's just the coil packs, maybe I could tackle it myself? Thoughts? I didn't know if I should start a new thread or not.

'17 at 106K with the 6R80 and I'm having transmission issues as well. Very weird rpm fluctuations at low speeds, erratic speedo gauge and only happens once a week, plus or minus so far. Only condition that is consistent is a very odd 2-3 shift sequence, when it transitions from 2-3 it feels like it shifts twice, you can watch the RPM's and see there are two distinct transitions in the 2-3 shift. All other shifts are perfect. Using Forscan I only a 2-3 misfires on a couple cylinders (maybe time for plugs again). Haven't learned how to read trans codes, yet. I am told that it is likely the "lead frame" (under the valve body) and the part is on indefinite backorder.
