I’m looking for some experienced ears to confirm if this engine noise is the normal high-pressure fuel injector sound or the beginning of a cam phaser issue.

The vehicle is a 2015 Ford Expedition Platinum with the 3.5L EcoBoost, currently sitting right around 120,000 miles. The engine in this video was completely warmed up, as the truck had been driven a couple of hours before I recorded this.

I haven't experienced any noticeable loss of power or check engine lights. The only drivability quirk is a very slight vibration when coming to a stop or creeping forward off the brake. I recently had the transmission fluid changed, which helped the vibration slightly but didn't eliminate it completely.

I am leaning toward this being the standard, rapid tick of direct injection, but given the mileage and the reputation of these engines, I want to ensure I am not overlooking a heavier mechanical clatter that points to timing components.

Thank you all so much!

Mine sounds like this. This recording is considerably louder btw on my phone and laptop than it sounded when I was recording it. And it sounded like it always does. I think the cam phasers are more noticeable when cold at first at least. Not the same sound at any rate. I have a similar truck as you, 118000 miles. Let me know if you find out it's broken, I'll add to my todo list as mine sounds just like yours.

Phaser, with ear phones. I'm hearing what sounds to be a secondary knock.

Thanks for the feedback, this is concerning to me as I'm about to overhaul my front end and was confident the the cam phasers were not an imminent expense. What would other symptoms should I notice were it the cam phasers? Or how can I further diagnose it?

Get a doctor's stethoscope and listen to them. Look at Makulocos videos on YouTube to learn all about them.

What’s intriguing is my video is after I had driven the truck and not cold. I don’t seem to have the typical rattle at cold start up with failing phasers.

On second thought it doesn't sound like a phaser, and they go away after a few seconds anyway. Hard to say what it is but it sounds pretty serious and I wouldn't drive it like that. Have it diagnosed.

That sounds pretty similar to all three of mine. I have a ‘16 Exp, ‘15 F150, and a ‘13 F150. You could check for a manifold leak. These tend to break off the back studs by the turbos, and they will get a light ticking noise at idle.

sweet! Do you find that it sounds similar after being warmed up?
That brings me some relief. I will check the back studs as well just in case.
