I’ve had trailers that tow absolutely beautifully and ones that tow so horribly they shouldn’t really be called trailers. The absolutely worst are bumper pull giant rectangular boxes. Add in extra draggy exteriors and poor weight balance to that giant box and its hands down worse than any other...
I drive Tahoe and like the sport shifting vs tow haul when coming down the pass. Tow haul with nothing heavy is too aggressive slows me up too much. Sport mode down shifts but not as aggressively seems to be about ideal for the Tahoe 7400 ft pass and down hill run. Rarely have to brake.
Towing...
Same issue I had recently but I already had read that this is a known problem with the faulty thermostat and when I had a engine temp spike 234 in 30 degree weather, empty ie no load I knew my suspicions were correct. Engine temp over 228 will display actual temp over the dummy gauge on the dash...
Same experience here. On my second set. First went 57,000 could have done 60k + safely but dragging a boat around I wanted maximum ramp traction. Never slipped a tire on the ramp with these either. Great tires
The coolant thermostat. The transmission temp is the first indicator of this faulty part which Ford redesigned due to this exact issue.
The transmission temperature is managed by a heat exchanger thats affected by this thermostat.
The engine temperature is also however it doesn’t show up...
2019 75,000
1000% the thermostat!!!!
I fought with my dealer. They refused it as a warranty item and quoted me $850 and I said fine I’ll come get it and have someone else fix it and file a claim with Ford. They responded with oh your a preferred customer $100 deductible well have it done...
Had 2’s on my own rig compared to the 3 peak rated rubber on the Terrains its no comparison. Not even remotely close. The KO’s need a different compound to survive the off-road application which is to totally different than the primary pavement focus ofthe terrain. Like I said different tools...
If Ford sold these with the Trail Terrains I’m convinced that the average buyers would think the vehicle is magic. Seriously the improvement in traction is huge under all conditions and little to no compromise even improvements regarding handling and ride quality.
The only reason I would go KO...
The KO’s are great tires but not great all around tires. They are heavy for the best off road durability you can buy. Which impacts highway ride quality, mileage and around town ride quality. I liked them on my Land Cruiser which was slow and saw lots of dirt.
The Trail Terrain is new 2021...
Yeah the fan runs with AC. Unfortunately when your towing and doing the long crawl the fans are already running. The front and back heaters blasting are the final effort to help shed heat . Did that going over Grants Pass OR in 100 degree weather. The good news is once at the top AC on full...
I’m running near identical weight as you are. Only 9ft 9in wide and 13ft high on the trailer. Running a double axle 8500’s Aluminum with the electric hydraulic full disc brakes. It tows nice plenty of power! The tow mode down shifting while coming off the highway can be pretty entertaining. I...
I’m seeing the same exact behavior. Solid 183-185 in flat highway driving in 60 degree weather. It will jump to 190 when stopped immediately coming off the highway and peak at 201 then it will creep down as I drive 30-35mph thru town.
I think the new “upgraded” thermostat is 190 tho I see transmission temps on the highway stable at 183-185. I need to find a diagram of the heat exchanger vs radiator to see if there’s an obvious correlation to how the coolant thermostat affects the transmission temperature. It clearly plays a...
Mind did the same. I had them work up cost to replace it anyway. Then said no thanks its a 1hour shop job $190hr shop rate and a $40 part. They quoted me $850!! I laughed said no I’ll pick it up have someone else do the fix then I would file a claim against the dealer.
Oh!! Your a premium...
Just did a 98 mile 2 directions errand. All highway 70-75mph light traffic 60F outside. Transmission ran 183-185 while moving. Pulling off the highway 187-190 was the high peak while in stopped traffic.
One climb from 100ft to 2000ft at 70mph temp ran 185 the whole climb.
Definitely running...
So trailer brakes are a must while backing down the ramp. My trailer is electric hydraulic disc setup and I use the manual trailer brake lever on the dash to actually back me down the ramp. Otherwise it’s tricky to modulate the brake pedal to avoid sliding down the ramp with the front tires...
Strictly dry yard moving to a hoist or ramp? Shoot we use golf karts at our club to move 28 ft sailboats. One friend uses his miata as a yard mule.
If there’s no road travel involved your fine. Ramp traction vs the junk OEM tires? Yeah I ditched those before I even towed. They were absolutely...
Literally just replaced my faulty thermostat last week on my 19. It progressively gets worse over time affecting transmission temperature and eventually popping up coolant temp at 228+ F
190-201 F seems to be normal low load transmission temps with the updated thermostat. I haven’t towed yet...
Tires make a big difference. But in the end its a truck! Modifying the suspension will most definitely not improve the ride other than better quality shocks. I have the CCD system its definitely better than the standard shock regarding ride.
You didn’t say which wheel you have. The 22’s...
Ok so 26ft 8.1L i/o?
Guessing your trailer is 8500 rated like mine. My 28ft Duel 8500 rated Aluminum trailer is 1700lbs. My boat is around 6500 dry no water in tanks and about 10-15 gallons of fuel.
Typical dry yard short haul your fine but just be wary about the stupid faulty thermostat...
Did you open the air box and check the air filter? Super easy to miss a catch on the air box when closing it. It will be louder with the air box not seated correctly and fully closed.
100 degree weather big boat with over size signs. And the questionable faulty thermostat 210-220 was typical at 55mph. Its like towing a parachute very draggy. Big climb we saw 240 at the very top for about a minute thats as hot as I will ever let it get knowing I’m at the top of the pass...
I’m in CA do sierra trips to the snow but also do lots of hot highway high speed long trips. I needed a 3peak but with good highway manners. BFG and Michelin come out of the same shop. Think of the Michelin tires as the softer East coast lower temp tires. Think of BFG as the west coast higher...
Not really a stressful load but thats a lot of miles. 750 miles from Seattle to Tahoe in July. Towed great but I do think the original thermostat was acting up. Never saw Hot temps but I had to pay attention to inconsistent temp spikes. Haven’t towed with the new thermostat yet but non towing...
