    Yes, exactly. I just replaced the old tires (255/70s or 30"x10") with the new tires (285/75 or 33"x11.5"). I used the stock 16"x7" wheels, which has 4.5" of backspacing. There were no other modifications made. BS = Backspacing. My apologies for assuming people would understand that.

    I have also had this problem for a couple of years with my 2000 5.4. I think it is pretty common and it is generally the sending unit, from what I have heard. I never fixed it, however, so I can't be certain, but I do know my truck has been running just fine with no problems.

    33x12.5 or 33x11.5 is probably the biggest you can go. Either should work fine on the stock wheels and no modifications. I have 285/75 (approx. 33x11.5) on the stock 16x7 wheels with no mods and there is no rubbing.

    I'm sure your alphasoniks are good--definitely better than the cheap visoniks I had. Maybe you can add a grille or beauty panel to cover it up. Window tint always helps. Or you can just throw something over it when you are parked for a while if you are worried about them getting stolen.
