That's a good possibility. Cv joints can wear but I would think there should be some shaking/vibration along with that. Not just the noise. I'm assuming the second gen has a sealed hub/bearing unit too. If that was wearing, I would expect at least a small amount of play when with the wheel off...
Yes with traction control it should apply brake at the slipping wheel to divert power across an axle, and in awd setting the transfer case is always diverting some power but it is not "locked" in 4x4, it allows some slippage to accommodate for differences in rpm while driving on dry...
So, rip and replace the starter find out that's not the problem rip and replace the solenoid > that's not the problem and so on till you're lucky enough to replace what is wrong. Or start upstream, spend 5 minutes verifying everything in line is functioning, then you can be sure of the problem...
The first thing we did when we brought our expy home was call a dealer and give them our vin to look up if the recall services were performed. Not a fan of spontaneous combustion.

The starter solenoid is on the starter and when energized it kicks the gear out to engage with the flexplate.
The part on the firewall is might be called different things but it is really just a big relay.
Try what notmyidi posted jump the two large terminals on the box mounted to the...
Actually if it was my truck, before I pulled the starter I would climb underneath with my meter, disconnect the starter (so there's no chance of it coming to life) and check for voltage at the starter while a helper turned the key. Just remember to be careful.

Not enough info to diagnose anything, but only cool on the freeway sounds like you've got a low charge. Should have operating pressures checked.

The expy is a well rounded workhorse and is sutied for many tasks but not particularly tailored to any one. It has towing capabilites akin to the f150, passenger and cargo capabilites of a loaded country squire, better clearance than smaller suvs (gen 1 anyway), and off road - it takes me...
Dealership = $$$$$
I had motorvac done last year on wifes car $165. A lot of independants charge a flat fee for the service.
Edit. Sorry it was $200.
But this isn't going to remedy any lean codes

The effectiveness of bottle additives is hotly debated. If you're serious about cleaning the top end and injectors take it to a service station with a motor vac machine. During the service they first physically clean the throttle body and intake, then they pull the feed line from the pump and...
Are you running at max a/c with the air recirculating or regular with it pulling in outside air? If you're not recirculating cabin air through the evaporator 40 degrees cooler than outside is appropriate even 30 degrees would be acceptable.

Definately go with platinum or iridium too cause then you won't have to change them again any time soon.
And thinking about it I do think I remember some folks on ford truck forums having the spark pplugs snapping off in the head on early 2000s 5.4s.
I was real careful about keeping the...
Make sure to put dieelectric grease in the boots when u change the plugs. Even with new boots you still have the possibility of the charge leaking between the boot and insulator.

01 5.4 also... the only hard part about mine was getting to them. Contortionist poses. Lots of stretching and swear words. You're probably better off if ur double jointed too.

The biggest pulley at the bottom of the engine - the shaft of the pulley/balancer slides on the end of the crankshaft. There is a seal on the timing cover (the front cover of the motor) where the shaft comes through. This might leak and if it is it will be dribbling down from the bottom center...
My leaks not that bad. Drip herre and there. I wipe it with a rag every week just to keep it from leaving little drips where its parked, but since I bought the new tires in march I've filled the diff once and it remains full.
Check the oil filter. If its grimy wipe it off with a rag and keep an eye on it. Clean up that whole area - it makes a world of difference when trying to spot an oil leak. There's alot going on in that area that could be leaking but a common culprit is that oil filter. Then maybe check the...
Breather tube runs along the top of the axle on the passenger side and terminates somewhere near the fender. Don't remember exactly. You can open the fill plug on the diff, and pull the dust cover off of the vent tube and (use a low pressure compressed air) and see if you can feel the air coming...
