I don't know what trailer you are using, but I do know that some Airstream owners have had problems with the backup system. Apparently all the shiny aluminum of an Airstream confuses the camera as it tries to locate the sticker.
I've been backing up trailers for over 40 years. I never tried the trailer assist until the other day, just for laughs, on my little kayak trailer that is really hard to backup. It's pretty amazing and works very well.
I'd say clean the cameras as others have said and if that doesn't work try...
When I picked mine up from the selling dealer they said it's a common problem but usually cured by hosing it off. They said that's what they mostly have to do to get them working again (and they don't charge for it if that's all it is!)
I've been pulling trailers for over 45 years. Horse trailers, boats, campers, I really never have a problem backing up.
I have a kayak trailer however that is pretty squirrely. So today I thought I'd set it up on Backup Assist to see how that worked. Amazing! d.
I think one of the problems is...
Is that dry weight or the trailer's max weight? And if it's dry, exactly how dry- do they include LP tanks and other things in the weight?
Our Airstream has a max weight of 7300 lbs, but fully loaded for travel it weighs about 6600. Unfortunately the only real way to know these things is to get...
We had Rotties for 20 years- but that was 20 years ago. Now we have a Border Collie and a Pyrenean Shepherd. No kids. We travel for a couple of months each year pulling our Airstream and the dogs come along.
When we bought our Expy we wanted a bench 2nd row but ended up with captain's chairs...
I had a similar problem. I think I solved it, but I'll see when I take the trailers out of storage in the next couple of weeks. I'll watch this thread.
I wasn't clear. I'm saying the vehicle alone steer axle weight should be close to the weight distributed front axle weight.
I always use the tape measure method on initial set up, and it's usually very close. I had to adjust by half a link on my Reeese Dual Cam to dial it in.
The way to REALLY know if the set up is correct is to do three passes on the scales.
1. Just the tow vehicle.
2. Vehicle and trailer with no weight distribution, with three separate weights ( steer, drive, trailer)
3. Vehicle and trailer with weight distribution, with three separate weights (...
No problems. Good power uphill, the tow/haul mode finds all the right shift points and does excellent engine braking on the down hills. It's a great tow vehicle and very comfortable.
Our 25' Airstream has a max of 7300lbs. It weighs 6600 fully loaded for travel. We travel with two adults, two dogs, two bikes and other stuff in the Expy. Using a weight distributing hitch every thing is within limits, verified on scales.
