Thanks Steve. See my post above, and you may remember my crank-no start thread. When the trip odometer reads near 130, I'm visiting the Costco pump (where they pump fuel for cripples like me).
Thanks, John. A condition I have should have included in may first post: crank-no start with low fuel level. I'm not concerned about running out of gas, just concerned about
keeping fuel level near 1/2 tank. I have experienced crank-no start twice when the gage was just above the 1/4 mark...
Thanks for the reply, BRIANGEE. I think I will stay with 10 for simple arithmetic. I will have a better idea of mileage after a few fill-ups.
Owned the 'o4 since new (18500 miles now) and never calculated MPG. If refueling was going to be several times once a month, then
your 14 suggestion...

Float sensor must have failed, as the fuel gage is not accurate. Going to use trip mileage as an indicator
of fuel level. Is using 10 MPG a conservative number to estimate fuel usage?
EXP is only driven for local errands. I was thinking of refueling when the trip odometer read 130...

This may help your husband (?):
Thanks for the info, BRIANGEE. My scenario is a little different. XP does not die underway. Runs/starts perfectly with fuel level a tad above 1/4 tank.
Steve, the xp runs perfectly. It starts every time with the fuel level above 1/4 tank. A new key makes no difference. I have 3 in the truck.
The gages all respond immediately. I can live refueling at 1/2 tank.....about once a month. Costco fuel attendants refuel cars with handicap plates...
Steve, my xp runs perfect. It just hasn't started the two times the fuel level was near 1/4 tank over two months, but starts after 10 minutes. I'm going to refuel at !/2 tank as a test.
I'm sorry, but don't plan on a trip to Santa Cruz to see me. I'm so badly crippled I rarely leave by bed...
Surprised you passed smog with a faulty cat. My '04 cats are in line, so when the first cat failed, it took out the second cat.
As gixer2000 suggested, cats can cost between $200 - 300 plus labor.

Tech and I agreed..... no sense in testing a perfectly running truck with no codes. Only clue to 'crank-no start' condition (twice in 2 months) was that it occurred with fuel at the
1/4 level. Fuel gage works perfectly, so the float may be sending a faulty message to the PCM (?). Temporary...
Thanks, moose. There must be a design factor involved with fuel consumption that coincides with gage graduations that determines 'miles remaining' at any given point.
My gage seems to move slower at top half-gage than when at bottom-half gage, which would follow that there are more gallons in...
Online search did not provide a definitive answer.
Anyone know approximate fuel amounts per line graduations on fuel gage?
Are there more gallons in the top half of the gage, or more in the bottom? I'm suspecting more gallons are
in the top half, and indicated fuel consumption accelerates...
