    Ok, here's an update. The valve did drop. I can pull it up with a magnet, but can't hold it in place to (attempt to) install the spring. Any suggestions?

    No. the valve did not drop. I will change the oil and filter on the other side of this. I have two questions: Do I need to remove the cam shaft to replace the spring? And which tool will I need to install the new string? Is this possible without removing the cam shaft?

    I didn't find anything in the wells, but where the timing chain is I did see what looked like a partially ground up piece of curved metal. One of the keepers I think. I went for it with my magnet, but lost it. The valve seal does seem to be intact however.
