It could have been more city vs highway miles but I felt like we drove it pretty consistently. One things for certain… the engine did not get good mileage whenever I used 93. I had expected the opposite. Maybe 91 (what’s recommended for my 2018) would be even better than the 89.
Used the same gas station and tried different octanes/mixes over the course of several months. Found 89 to be the best balance of performance and fuel efficiency.
I am not trying to be facetious here, but who does the below document apply to then? Pulling a quote directly from the document:
“Manufacturers have been required by federal law to
provide emission control coverage for vehicles since 1972…Specified major emission control components are covered...
How’d you get Ford to budge on this? They are playing hard ball to cover my cat that went out at 79,000 miles. Now that I’m at 81,000 (even though it was replaced), it’s getting even more difficult.
I had a rep tell me yesterday that it varies by state and I go, “Do you not understand what the...
I made a Tom-Burgundy-cannonball style announcement to my wife and kids that I received an urgent letter from Ford about a life and death safety recall on our vehicle.
I then proceeded to read the very boring addendum before they one by one walked out of the room. #dadjokes.
That is strange. The only similar experience I’ve had was on a 2011 Town and Country. The TIPM (computer that controls everything) went haywire and started opening doors/windows on the highway before finally shutting the engine off completely. We were going about 55-60 mph with all of this going...
Not entirely sure, but when I mentioned trying to clean it they said the honeycomb structure itself was damaged. Might have been a lie, but I’m inclined to take a man at his word. Worth noting I had the cam phaser job done twice, the second time because of seriously bad engine knocking. Also the...
Since I‘m being told catalytic converters are on back order nationwide, anyone have any experience doing these DIY solutions to clear the P0420 code?

1. Cat converter cleaner
2. Soaking cat in dish soap overnight
3. Extending O2 sensor(s)
Yes. Mine was particularly loud in second gear. It was difficult to record the sound (I tried several times) because you could only really hear it from inside the car at high acceleration. There was simply too much white noise for an audio device to pick it up, but it was clear as day and came...
Turns out it wasn’t normal and was the turbo going bad. Had the turbo and all related hoses replaced. Sound gone. There is a VERY faint version of the sound under heavy boost, this is what I think people refer to as the normal boost noise.
What I had before was loud and probably related to a...
Thanks for the link! Either way I’m glad I replaced because my old one because the green o-ring had several tears in it (see attached photo). Also attaching a video of how to access for the previous poster.

All hoses appear to be tight...
That’s not the sound I have, mine sounds more like compressed air being released.
However if you want to try to replace the BOV, on my expedition it is right behind the IC. Two 8mm bolts holding it on, I didn’t even need to disconnect any hoses.
for me it was on the drivers side of the IC and...
I recently had the VCT cam phaser job done on my 2018 Expedition. When I got it back I noticed a WHOOSH/hissing sound on the driver’s side while under turbo boost. It doesn’t sound terrible, almost like compressed air being released.
Through some research I decided to replace the Blow Off Valve...
I believe the static/hissing/whoosh noise was coming from the fact that the BOV wasn’t re-installed with the piston and o-ring lol. The left one is what I pulled out, the right one is the one I put in. I’m going to make a separate post about this to make sure I’m thinking about it correctly…I’m...
Picked it up today. Looking over the report it looks like they did in fact replace a tensioner as well as the left side VCTs again. Sound is gone so far.
Only other oddity, which may be attributable to my heightened sense of awareness after having the engine apart twice, is when the turbo kicks...
Heard back from the dealer today. They took it apart and verified no damage to the timing chain or any of its components. What they did find was that one of the new VCT cam phasers was bad so they are replacing it again.
One possibility is that they used the old-style part number (starts with...
That’s what I was thinking. I texted my rep and asked for pictures of the chain, tensioners, guides, pistons, and valves to verify that the diligence was done and no internal damage was found.
Nothing so far. Although according to Rocketman I need to be asking for a new engine…
I’m going to call the dealer rep tomorrow if so don’t hear anything by then.
Issue couldn't be directly replicated at the dealership (go figure!) since it's somewhat intermittent. However, I was able to provide several videos and without taking it apart yet they believe it may be timing chain related. Either the chain itself or the tensioner. More to come as I get more...
Well the fact that it stops with octane booster is reassuring. I also just learned that they recommend octane 91 on these engines. I’ve always used 87.
I just added about a quarter thank of 93 (the other 3/4 is 87) and so far so good.
If it doesn’t come back again I’m inclined to just write...
80,000 miles on an Expedition we bought a few months ago.
Already had VCT work done to address startup knocking. This new knocking is worse than what I was hearing before the VCT. Already verified it’s not the wastegate actuator arm.
I always fill up with 87 octane but last night I added...
I had this issue on my 2018 Ford Expedition. I ended up using Vallejo acrylic black paint and brushed it on. I lightly sanded it before applying but honestly didn’t spent a ton of time. Painted right over some of the existing chrome because I didn’t want to be there all day.
Not perfect but...
