I want to replace my 8.8" 3.31 geared axle with a 3.73 geared axle. I can pick up this veryu axle for $205.00 at my local pick-a-part vs $250-300 for the gears and $800 for the install. Aside from the obvious '97-'02 Expeditions, what other Ford vehicles could I use as donors??? Like-year F-150's, vans, full-size cars? I'm looking for direct swapability. No cutting and welding mounts, etc. Which vehicles have the same WMS-to-WMS specs? Thanks!

what is a "veryu axle" ??

f150 axles are leaf springs setup vs expy coils

expy 8.8 axles didn't come with 3.73 gears, 9.75 axles did but that means a diff driveshaft

lincoln navy are the only other bolt on

I have a 8.8 rear end carrier from a 03 F150 I don’t need anymore. It’s a clutch pack type. It has the ring but not the pinion. If you are buying a gear set all parts needed will come with the swap.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate the info. Does anyone know the WMS measurements of an F-150? If they are the same as the Expy, I'm thinking I'll grab an 8.8 with the 3.73's and do some cutting and welding. Although I'd prefer not to.

Are you sure you have an 8.8 back there? My 2000 EB and everybody else I've seen on this site has the 9.75 with either 3.55 (like mine) or the 3.73's

Well, according to the online info for my VIN, it's an 8.8 with 3.31's. Could this info be incorrect??? I'd love to have the 9.75 with 3.55's or 3.73's. But I think that's wishful thinking. To me, it "feels" like a 3.31-geared vehicle, especially with the close-to-32" tires!!!

you can look at the pumpkin cover whether 8.8 or 9.75, one bolt on it has a tag from ford with more info, ratio etc

some folks said their eb was 4.6 which usually went with 8.8

Most of the EB 1st gen had the tow package. Your gear ratio is on door tag and pumpkin tag. Two things: A4wd stands for "Automatic 4 wheel drive" changing the rear ring and pinion, may cause problems. There is a front differential. They may both have to be the same ratio. The computer will detect different axel speeds, engage front driveshaft and damage the transfer case. The ring and pinion is not that expensive. I changed them(20yrs ago) on a 93 5.0 Mustang. It was $95, a couple hours labor, 2 or 3qts of synthetic gear oil, a traction additive and new speedo gear. A local "speed shop" did it for about $275. I went from a 3.08(55 mph would be around 1400 rpm) to a 3.55. Not a major change, but definitely improved(55mph it would turn about 1700 rpm). The shop recommended 3.73, that would of slightly better off the line. Ford motors like to rev high to make there best power.

definitely if 4x4, or running 4x4, front rear axle ratios must be the same, tho the front axle can be disabled, at least for 97-8 & prob for 2000
