It only takes one snow storm if they are mixing sand with the salt on the roads, or driving behind a truck hauling sand uncovered. I have had windshields destroyed in one trip before.

I have seen some minor pitting, but have had 2 chips to repair in 6 months/12K miles. I drove my Jeep GC 150K with no chips. Stuff doesn’t just bounce off the Expedition glass. I have had 1 other vehicle with this issue and it was a luxury car. I wish Ford would just use tougher glass.

Windshields are not meant to be indestructible. Durable? Absolutely. Totally common and expected that they’ll get dinged up or worse from time to time. They’re easily replaced.

True enough, but when my MB glass finally could not be repaired, after several cracks had been repaired, I replaced it with aftermarket glass and had no more issues. The OEM glass went about 80K miles and the aftermarket glass went about 160K (240K total on car) miles with no issues - same car, same driver, same driving style and locations.

My '04 Expy 190,000 on factory glass, my '16 35,000 on factory glass. The key is to leave plenty of space from the vehicle in front. And when you do have to replace always specify OEM replacements.

+1 on the OEM replacements

Potential huge impact on higher end vehicles with OEM screens having more sound insulating properties than whatever they’ll give you off the shelf.

100% true on OEM sound screen glass. Also, its not just leaving space or the speed you are travelling, sometimes you can be minding your business and BAM - chip.

OEM replacements. My comments also apply to non sound screen glass. Aftermarket is not manufactured to the same specs. There could be problems with clouding and other defects in the lamination, etc. Guys in the auto body industry know this...

Glass is much less durable these days. I put a brand new windshield on my '17 right after I bought it and it had sand pitting within a few months. I've put maybe 5000 miles on it since the new windshield was installed!

My 2009 XLT was from California and had 36K miles when I bought it. The windshield had lots of sand pitting. When I drove toward the setting sun I could hardly see out the windshield because of it.

Probably some new regulations in the manufacturing process....making it lesser quality.
