Gfs 1999 Eddie Bauer blows only hot air. When I added refrigerant it said it was completely out. The clutch doesn't spin and I pulled the relay and put it back in and the rpms dipped so I'd assume it's still working. I saw there's a diode for the ac clutch should I test that. Or is it a bad compressor.

The compressor will not start if the minimum refrigerant level/pressure isn't present. If the system is empty the compressor is not going to start unless you override the pressure switch which is not a good idea for the most part. If the refrigerant is empty there's a leak that needs to be identified and repaired. Then pull a vacuum on it and the system will then pull refrigerant in to fill the vacuum. Once it has enough the compressor will start if it's suppose to.

How did you "add" refrigerant if the system was empty? The only way to do it at home is if the ac compressor works. if it does not work, the only way is to bring it to the shop where they hook up their machine, add dye, and check for leaks. I think that's your only option. Also, unless AC compressor exploded, you do NOT need to replace receiver/dryer. Although its a good idea.
