On one truck I had a Grover compressor, which is what's used on many fire trucks. It's the real deal, very nice stuff that's American made and pretty pricey. Its crankcase is oil filled and it lasts. I found it on ebay.

I had it piped to a wonderful and haunting Nathan K5H horn a locomotive. You can imagine where that came from. Nice setup with a manual valve that could throttle the air.

There's a lot of Chinese garbage out there. You get what you pay for. Either pay a small fortune for real stuff or find it very used for still a high price or buy cheap crap.

On a first generation Expedition, the pump was under the hood and the trumpets were separated behind the bumper. The tank was on the frame rail.

Really a beautiful note. You could really hear it for miles.

Do you happen to have any pics from your setup? I can only imagine how loud it was

Don't have any pictures. A lot of work if you use copper tubing but simple stuff. I just found that the cheap junk out there is full of flaws. The backs blow off the plastic trumpets, the $2 relays fail and run down your battery. Chinese pumps throw their rods or explode. Just junk to keep the price down.

I have a first gen, 2001 Expy and the OEM horn is weak when I lock the doors or hit the alarm on the Fob. Otherwise with the horn button pressed it is loud.

I was told the wiring is weak for the horn and that there was a TSB to replace the wire from the relay to the horn. Any truth to this?

Just change it - disconnect the horn wire use it activate a relay that has a battery connection of at least 16 gauge wire and you’ll be fine

I have 3 Grover horns on my Expy. A dual pair of 13" horns paired with a 30". I have a small 1-liter tank and a vacuum-operated compressor from an old air-ride system. An electric solenoid wired to a button next to my driving position to activate it. It has saved me a time or two. Like when a dump truck was backing out of a driveway and didn't see me. He sure heard me though. When I hit the horn, he hit his air brakes. Another time, I passed a truck on the freeway and, for some reason, he fwapped his horn at me. I just fwapped him right back and continued on. My tank and compressor are mounted on my firewall and the horns are behind the grille pointed straight down. I painted them flat black so they are not so obvious.

Do you have any pics of your setup? And how did you use the vacuum setup because that might be a way I might go with mine.

Don't have any pictures right now. The Expy is tucked into the garage. Anyway, you can't see the horns because of how they're mounted. Next time I get the Expy out, I'll remember to snap a picture. The vacuum compressor brand is Hadley. The horns are Grover. The 1 liter tank has no brand.
