Theirs some things in life you don't want to know, and fried bearings is one of them. He could have his oil analyzed, but then what? A $6,000 engine. If it were me change out oil and filter, as long as theirs no damage or noise, just keep a watch on it, maybe consider trading up soon!

Change the oil. A skip when driving is most likely a bad plug or coil. My 05 with 160k burns 1 quart every 800 miles using motor craft 5-w20. I started adding 1/4 quart of lucus to each oil change and it’s dropped to 1/4 quart.

Way back in 87, I had an 85 mustang gt with the 5.0 motor. It burned through a quart of 20/50 castrol every 700 to 800 miles. Couldn't even imagine if I used the thinner 5/30 they recommend. Ford actually printed a tsb bulletin, that stated its perfectly normal to consume these amounts. I almost blew a gasket when I read this, my car only had 30k miles. Because it was out of the 12 month, 12 thousand Mile warranty, bought it from the dealer used car lot. they didn't even do the diagnosis/ repair at the dealer, they shipped it to a gas station around the corner. I've owned 5 Fords with 5.0 engines. That was the only one that consumed oil. Break in the first 1000 miles is so critical on most vehicles, and abusing it keeps the piston rings from fully seating in to the cylinder's walls. This unfortunately has the long term effect of not only oil consumption, but loss of power due to piston ring blow by.

In our household, 'the wife', more affectionately referred to as "my wife", drives the wheels off our 03 LXT 5.4. Her husband, myself, personally and diligently checks the oil and sees to it that the vehicle is always
ready to go and safe. Does 'the wife' in your situation have her very own step stool to stand on when she
checks the oil ?

I personally like my black plastic one, I bought from ace hardware. Holds over 300lbs. Perfect for a Moosed size bod like mine.

I don't know what happened.... The wife has been driving it and said the Expedition has a "miss" and when driving occasionally it will "buck" or hesitate. I took it for a drive and upon startup I heard a slight rattle but it went away.

Sure enough while maintaining a certain speed I'll get a miss or hesitation. Its way more than a spark miss. Turned right around and started looking it over.

No oil on the dipstick... I added 4 quarts total to get it to proper level. I don't know where it went. Where she normally parks there is no drips at all. I haven't been checked her oil since we got it... approx. 8 months ago. The wife said she got an oil change but confessed she didn't. Last oil change was in May.

I'm guessing maybe 100 miles on the engine while it was in its "bucking/hesitation" phase. Mostly highway miles.

Did we kill it? Currently doesn't sound like anything is hurt. It just turned over 100k miles. 2005 with a 5.4. Well maintained (before we got it) Anything I should look out for?

My Daughter ran her 2012 focus out of oil when she was away at college. (Ugh! And I am a car guy!) When she got home I changed the oil and only 1 quart came out. Ugh. Her car ran another 12,000 miles, never as smooth as it use to .... and two weeks ago the bearings went. Now she has a rebuilt engine from Ford and I am out $5K!

Never buy a vehicle owned by a woman driver. They drive the wheels off them. "Maintenance" is fixing stuff when it breaks, usually by family member. They make every break down into a crisis, for others.

It's not in their DNA! Just like dragging around a mall isn't in ours. Women as a rule do not like getting dirty. That's why they never pop a hood. Now if their was a sale on shoes at Nordstrom my wife would hit that key as quick as she could get it into ignition. We didn't marry them for their mechanical ability!
