Blower motor ghost

Okay so this used to happen on my Transit van, both the big ones and the little connect. Fan speed only works Max setting number four, change resistor, sometimes the pigtail if the wires look melted and not making good contact, move on with your life. My 2014 expedition fan STILL WORKS on number four with the resistor unplugged from the harness! To make sure I wasn't dreaming I pulled the connector from the fan motor itself and of course it stopped haha. I checked the pins on the connector going to the resistor and I didn't get any voltage. I also happen to be changing the radio so I was able to inspect the wires coming from the speed selection knob, I don't see any splicing or previous work at either of the three locations mentioned above. Does anybody know how to explain this to me or what should I expect? I see the relay is in position 3 under the hood, I didn't have the time today but thinking I might have to pull it and feed it 12 volts and check the normally open and close function. Any input is greatly appreciated

Well i was wrong, new resister fixed it. Obviously voltage only gets directed towards the resister on settings lower than 4 - Never thought to check for the presence of voltage on anything but the setting that would provide the full 12 volts. Lesson learned.
