We are thinking of upgrading to a 2018 Expedition from our 2009. I replaced the hood of my 09 with a steel hood due to bubbling paint and the rear hatch has been painted twice and is bubbling up again.

Has anyone has any issues with corrosion on the new all aluminum body? I dont want to go through this again....

On aluminum it would be oxidation not corrosion, correct me if I’m wrong. I have not had any issues with my 2017 F150 and hope to not have any with my new Expy. With that said, a good clay, polish and seal will help keep the paint in great shape as well as a good PPF on the front end to avoid rock chips that could expose bare aluminum to the elements.

I could be mistaken here but I believe what they are referring to is actual corrosion. It was due to stamping the aluminum hoods in the same stamps as the steel ones which transferred enough steel to cause corrosion which then led to bubbling paint on the aluminum hood. Like I said, I may be completely out of my wheel house but I believe this to be the issue in the older gems. I, for one, have had no issue on my 4th gen.

Makes sense! Dissimilar metals don’t go well together! Hahahaha

I have a 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4, purchased new. The aluminum corrosion began on the rear tailgate before the 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty expired.

Ford has updated their TSB regarding aluminum panel corrosion on Expedition and Navigator models to include the 2018 model year.

That tells me that the problem still exists, include the new generation models.

This is what I am afraid of.... corrosion due to contamination in the aluminum. No sense getting a new to us Expy if we are to have the same bubbling paint not only on the hood and liftgate, but the possibility of this happening on the entire body scares me....

I don’t believe anyone has reported this issue but I assume it takes a couple years to develop.

What did the TSB say and what is Ford doing about it (for the affected customer)?

In the aerospace industry, our aluminum parts go through alodine finishing as a final step prior to paint. This process is used widely throughout the industry and works exceptionally well. It passivates the surface making it less reactive with oxygen but, even better, is the resultant surface which provides enhanced paint adhesion performance. It's not an expensive process in materials or equipment (immersion tank line) and I would hope Ford would be using something equivalent to this - but don't know.

From what I can find, Ford is trying to lead the way in meeting all the "green"mandates. I've read a few articles on their e-coat and two step wet paint processes. What everyone should know about this green endeavour is that it very often has unintended consequences. Like those recycled paper cups that start leaking before you can finish drinking your coffee. It more often than not follows the old adage "there are no free lunches".

Currently have my 2015 in the Ford body shop here in Daytona Beach. Swapping out my entire rear lift gate due to the all way too old bubbling paint issue where the skin folds at the bottom of the door. Seems like Ford has really taken the 5th on this issue since you can find stories like this all the way back to 2000 when the aluminum panels were first introduced. My last was a 2006, and I had the issues then too! Then switched to F150's for several years before purchasing this currently owned 2015. The issue began at the upper 50K mile range, and stupidly, I didn't address it till I just turned over 60K and of course Ford didn't want to own it! Luckily I have a buddy, Ford corporate, who was able to get the job down to just under $1200, originally they told me the lift gate was around $3800 to do. Still not happy with that and will address it further down the road, possibly through legal channels, since I've seen so many that have gotten the replacements even long after the warranty. The body shop told me it's kind of the luck of the draw, sometimes they'll pay, others they won't! That doesn't work for me!

I bought a used 2014 Expedition Limited and it is in great shape but I didn't know about the bubbling paint until I bought it and saw it bubbling under the lift gate and under the hood. I had the hood and the gate repainted. They didn't match the color very well and my hood had a yellowish color to it so they did paint it again. Now I will have to wait and see how long it last until I have to get it repainted again. I love the Expedition though.
