My 2013 Expy has had a problem of the gear shift not releasing from drive. Rocking the car doesn't help. The brake lights and brake light switch work. When the shifter is pulled to shift gears it sounds like a relay is making under the dash or in the steering column. But sometimes the shifter wont move. After while it does move but I'm afraid I'll get stranded sometime..I have opened the aux. port on the shifter to release the solenoid but it doesn't seem like there is anything in that little square hole to release or push down like a plunger. Help!

Youtube this video shows an easy way to get it out of park. Used to have the same issue with my F150 and it turns out it's the brake switch under the dash but this will help you from getting stuck.

Two comments...

(i) When our shifter started to misbehave it was caused by a weak battery, or maybe weak solenoid in the shifter, either way having a good 12V resolved things.
(ii) You're right, having removed the cover there is nothing obvious to press to release the shifter, however if you press (we used the key), things do move and the shifter did release.
