A buddy of mine did this on his F150 with black paint. I don't think he roughed it up enough though, and it eventually started to chip off and the chrome showed through. But by preparing it properly and a good paint, it would probably work well.

I took a ride over to my regular body shop and asked the same thing. I specifically asked about bead blasting the grille and shooting it with matched black and clear coat. His response was they have not seen good results from doing this, because of how Ford adheres the chrome to the plastics.

On the other side of the coin, if you believe what you read on the forums... I've read in many instances where people have gone the bead blast route, used a good bonding agent, then had the grille shot with paint and clear coat.

I decided to purchase a unpainted/un-prepped grille and let my body shop shoot it. I'll turn around and sell my chrome grille either locally on Craigslist or eBay.

Ya you will really have to take your time with prep. I sprayed mine in the truck bed liner which is real tacky and when it hardens is like cement. I have chips all over my chrome. For some reason it just doesnt stick well to it at all.

duplicolor is the way to go for DYI PTM.... just make sure you prep very well if not all your hard work will not last.... scuff it up well and think about using some adhesion promoter such as bull dog http://www.wmbarr.com/product.aspx?catid=1&prodid=56... then finish it off with some clear coat... since the clear will take the abuse and keep the paint from chipping... also spray in thin layers.... and like everything else take your time

yeah it would look good... just really have to rough up the chrome and use some self etching primer but it can be done.... or order a black part from ebay and reuse your pad and valance....
