first off I want to say hi to everyone here I am so glad I found this forum!I've been test driving and looking at vehicles this whole past year and it wasn't until I test drove an expedition that I found what I was looking for !I just love the ride , the way you sit high w/ all the visibility/ the space -only problem is I can't afford one new ...I spent hours and hours and hours online researching all the problems that they have and from what I can surmise the years 2007 eight and nine are the best years with less issues ..in the 2009 would be the best one?Any advice you guys can give me as I need to buy vehicle yesterday how many miles is too much I have seen a couple for $3000 with 180,000 miles on them and I have seen a 2009 w/60,000 for 18,000$...I actually found a 2015 for 28,000 with 24,000 miles on it had leather and synch three..I just want reliability as the vehicle I have now is electronically not safe engine shutting off I just don't want to buy a used vehicle that's going to happen too..Sorry so long winded ..

Welcome to the forum. All the 3rd gens are pretty good (2007-2017). My 07 is perfect for me and I’m happy with it. 08 and 09 etc are all good as well. The 08+ units have newer design spark plugs but if the 07 plugs have been changed like mine they are updated anyway. 04-early 07 plugs had issues breaking apart when changing and you need a special tool to remove them at that point, still not a killer just be aware. One of these trucks for $3,000 is one to avoid, probably has tranny or engine problems. Just shop around and be aware.

Welcome to the forum!

What JExpedtion07 said about the model years.

I bought my 2005 in 2013 it had 119,000 miles on it. I drove it for 3-1/2 years and traded it in with 146,000 miles on it. It was still running strong but it was rusting out pretty badly and I couldn't see putting the kind of money into it that I would have needed to to keep it on the road. In my mind, how many miles on it is right for you depends on how long you want to keep it and how many miles you put on it in a year. For example if you average 30,000 miles per year and you buy an Expedition with 100,000 miles on it you could get roughly 3-1/2 years of fairly trouble free driving assuming it is in good shape when you buy it.

The 2015 with 24,000 miles on it will have the 6 cylinder EcoBoost, it is the latest generation of the Expedition before the brand new 2018s came out. I love my 2017. I'm very happy with the EcoBoost engine, it is like a rocket compared to my 2005. For some people the V8 is the most important feature of the truck, for me I am happy with the 6 cylinder, not having the V8 doesn't bother me because before I bought the 05 the last V8 that I owned was in 1986.

Things to look out for are rusted rockers, radiator supports and body mounts but it depends on how old you want and what your budget is. If you don't plan to do a lot of off roading, look into the extend length trucks (EL) the difference is significant on the inside - you can fit a full sheet of plywood or drywall with the seats down. And you get extra storage behind the 3rd seat which comes in handy.

I love my 12 EL Limited. It’s been perfectly reliable the last 6 months and I’ve put over 30,000 km (~18,000 miles) on it!

The EL is a must if you have kids in sports or carry a lot.... sucks putting the seat down all the time but I manage. The regular length doesn’t have all that much space with the third row up, just enough for my tool bags and that’s it. I occasionally take my truck off road so I purchased the standard length in a XLT trim. I’ve done some upgrades, Fractory Navigation/ Infotainment being my latest just to add a bit to the plain trim.

Bought our 2014 LTD used with about 25,000 on it...going on 46,000 now and still going strong. Primarily used for towing a 3200 lb camping trailer, but good all-around town truck as well. Rides smoother and interior is quieter than wife's 2015 Lexus ES...but don't tell her.
