Hot Cargo Area with Seats down

Last night after returning from a 2hr trip skiing, the skis and other items at the bottom of the pile were really warm. Not a big deal, but when I had trouble holding the them due to heat, I got worried the wax might be affected.

After getting all the gear out, the heat seemed to be coming from the hinge covers where the 3rd row seats were folded down. More specifically, the hinges themselves. I then lifted the seats and the seats themselves were quite warm - felt very much like heated seats.

Do any of the Expys have heated 3rd row? If so, how do I shut them off.
Anything else that could be causing this?

I have a 2015 Ford Expedition with the dual-zone HVAC system.

After buying it, I learned that when the rear controls are set for heat, the warm/hot air is only forced out of the floor vents - they system will NOT distribute air from the upper ducts.

Is it possible you model has the same feature? If so, if you had the rear heat on and the seats folded, the heat would be blown under the folded seats.

I really hate this feature on my Expedition, as it prevents the rear seat passengers from having warm air distributed from the upper vents.

HVAC 101 heat rises, you are in a tin box you don’t want heat out of the upper vents lol. The floor goes cold that way and heat goes right back out.

Sure is there is only a few million people that have different ways of doing things, and any MFG should allow them to do what they want.

Really there is no way to make everyone happy so they make the majority or folks happy.

I agree to an extent - but some design features are downright stupid and cumbersome to use.

To adjust the rear HVAC settings from the front seat in my 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 (with the up-level HVAC system), it takes numerous touches of small icons on my dash screen to adjust them.

To increase or decrease the heat, it can take 6-7 touches, then to increase or decrease the fan speed, it can take another 6-7 touches (after several touches on the screen to reach the rear HVAC control screen).

Ford also determined that I am not permitted to synchronize the front and rear HVAC controls, from the front seat.

How does not letting people scroll though all their presets make the majority happy? How does not allowing you to sync front and rear temperature make the majority happy?

My statement was more about your general statement. "Ridiculous. Why ford hobbles your ability to do things the way you want is mind boggling sometimes." not this particular issue.

I have only owned mine for a few months now and am still learning new things. My wife drives it mostly, and we don't have kids, so the back area of ours is used more like a truck bed.

As noted, the air from the floor vents is heating things up. I’ve noticed the same issue, but not enough to be concerned. It seems like with the seats folded down, there isn’t a lot of air flow.

solution is to turn down the rear heat - once the engine is up to temp, HI is very hot! - and speed. Or turn rear off completely (unless you have people in second row, then I don’t know of a perfect solution).

That’s the one thing I miss: separate mechanical controls for the rear, in the front.

I previously owned a Dodge Durango SLT 4x4, until I bought the new Expedition.

The Dodge had a VERY simple and easy to use design for the front and rear HVAC controls, including large mechanical switches - and I could sync the front and rear systems by turning one switch. It also permitted bi-level distribution of the heat in the rear (that model had a third seat).

To answer the OPs question, the “floor” vent for the rear is at the base of the passenger side 3rd row seat (you’ll see the little slats in the side panel). With the seats down and stuff piled in that area it will hold the heat there. If you want them to stay cool, pack the skis on the driver side of the cargo area as there is only the 1 vent back there.

I think it's possible to do what you want, but like so many things in the Expy these days, every time you shut down it reverts the settings to the default that you don't want!

When I carry my wet hockey gear home from the arena, I always want the rear controls on roof vents, heat, and max fan. I set the fan/heat from the front, then I have to reach back behind me to the rear controls on the back of the console and select the roof vents (which I've learned to do by feel now). Does an awesome job drying out my gear BTW... but my 2006 was much easier to deal with because it had the separate mechanical controls on the header for the rear HVAC.

[Edit] Just noticed that the 2nd poster was in a 2015 Expy - no idea how that one worked. YMMV!
