Anyone have experience with a dealership that has installed the Hunter Touchless Alignment Inspection System? Had the wife's Explorer Sport (AWD) in for an exhaust CSP and toe-link recall. When I drove up, I noticed the new boxes in each lane of the service drive which apparently are able to calculate alignment discrepancy just from side images. Shortly after the service coordinator sat in the car to get the mileage, another gentleman walked up with an iPad and starts talking about the new Hunter Touchless Alignment Inspection System which indicated the front wheels were toed out in opposition and that the dealer was offering a $99 alignment special - normally $140. While I took them up on the alignment special, when I picked up the car I was disappointed to see that the only a post alignment diagnostic printout was attached. I seem to recall that in the past, both pre and post alignment diagnostics where included, so did I just throw away $99 on an unneeded alignment?

Why didn’t you ask the dealership service employee why you weren’t given a pre alignment specifications printout?

Unfortunately the dealership, while convenient to our home, is located on the frontage road of a major freeway, it was rush hour, and I took things for granted and did not review the printout until after I arrived back home. On the plus side, the dealership did wash and vacuum our car, something they have not done on our regular service visits for quite some time.

The dealer I went to for recall work refused to do the recall unless I consented to an alignment that apparently most customers agree to. They have the "drive through" Hunter system. I found a different dealer. My alignment was fine.

I think I would call Ford to let them know one of their authorized dealers is trying to gouge Ford recall customers.

I think I would be calling my state's Attorney General to file a deceptive trade practices complaint, especially if this was a recall mandated by the NHTSA.

I was told at my dealer, this system is not accurate, it just a guide. When it comes to an alignment there are 2 things: does your car pull? are your tires wearing funny? If both NO, you don't need one. You can check your 'toe', with a string, pulled tight(an old trick). You tie a string so that its even with both sides of rear tire. Next pull straight to the front of the vehicle, along the front tire. With a tape measure, check the the distance between the front and back of the front tire. It should be even or slightly toed in. The Camber can be checked, with a level. You put a something straight, across the edges of your front rim(top & bottom). The level should be perfectly flat.

The laser just takes the place of the string and level.
