Sorry I worded that poorly. E10 or pure gas was the option I meant.

id run the good stuff. Anytime I’ve put 87 in stuff that has a tune for 93 it kills the power. Not sure you’d see any gain dollar wise, but it’s not worth it to me to have a high per engine and have it slug around.

Somewhat related note, I always run 89 in cars without a premium recommendation. 87 seems to not have enough btus these days. Didn’t used to be that way and I noticed it around the time e10 became common that stuff just didn’t run right on it anymore. Typically I will run 89 unless it’s the dead of winter, but even then I can tell a drop off on 87.

I can’t speak for pure gas with the 3.5. Everyone says they see a gain when I’ve discussed it on other stuff. That’s all I have on that one.

Thanks for all the input and my apologies to the original poster, I didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Based on how it feels from the drivers seat, the Expy definitely drives a tad quicker and shifts smoother on premium fuel. I've also noticed on premium (93 -Texas) I get 15.4MPG average vs. 12MPG on 87. I've heard using non-ethanol fuel you'd get higher MPG's as well but cannot confirm this.

I'm curious to know how many tank comparisons did you do between 87 and 93 to state that kind of mpg difference? No offense, but that doesn't seem accurate from my experience. On my '15 Ecoboost I ran 5 tanks each of 87, 89, and then 93 to test. 93 netted about 1mpg better over 87. This was running 90% highway tests over several months. Stating a 3.4mpg difference seems way off.

Too many variables to make any kind of sound, accurate claim in either of your cases It’s a lost cause

Fair question, I’ve run probably 5-6 tanks on the regular fuel. I’ve done probably 70/30 city/highway. Very consistent in my experience, we might have different experiences due to having different gen Ecoboosts with different tunes. At the end of the day @Robert McMillan is right. The way I see it, a gas guzzler is what it is, no point in worrying about it’s fuel consumption :driver:

True indeed. I was just surprised to see that kind of difference but the newer motors with different tunes make quite a bit more power than mine so they very well could run that different between the octanes.
