I have a 2012 XLT EL and as the title says, I can remove the key from the ignition when the vehicle is not in park AND turned off. I'm wondering if there is a DIY way to diagnose the likely cause and possibly fix it myself. Or if anyone may know what the most likely culprit is so I can get if extended warranty may cover it?

Replace the key blade. They are so worn that while they can activate the ignition tumblers, they can still slip out of the lock tumbler. Very common with turn key ignition if worn enough. Also if you have significant weight on the keychain while the key is in the ignition, this can cause issues with the tumblers.

I have the exact same issue. I bought a shifter off eBay and Voila! Buuuut, my shifter so much more 'prettier' that I just want to swap the electronics. My issue is NOT the tumblers although that could be an issue but not always a culprit.
