I've had an odd 4WD problem... when I set the Expy to 4WD (not AWD), The system slams like I just ran over a 4x4 post every 30 yards. Or like I drove over the Mother Of All Expansion Joints. Is my transfer case slipping a tooth? If so, why not in AWD? I haven't taken her to a shop yet, I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this yet to gain insight, and maybe to fix it myself. Thanks!

Sounds like something in the front differential or transfer case went south. I guess in Awd, it's not engaging. Either scenario, it don't sound cheap. Get it fixed before it gets worse. Your in Kansas, your gonna need a functional 4 wheel drive through April

Hey Terence, a few quick questions..
What model year is the expy?
Do you mean A4WD instead of AWD? I didn't think you could have AWD and 4x4 both, but I learn something new every day.
What road the road conditions, are you driving in 4x4 on dry pavement?

I have a 2003 4x4 with 5.3 and 101,000 miles.
I have been using 4x4 high and Auto 4x4 a lot lately, winter here with snow.

I have heard and felt a Strange grrrr noise that has developed recently.

It is random. It does not always happen.

Sometimes a clunk sound, or abrupt feeling of engagement or disengagement, ...maybe.

I was considering a rebuilt transfer case.

The automatic engagement or "auto 4x4" transfer case has clutches in it.

Was also thinking that the wheel hub is operated by vacuum actuated hubs.

Please update what you come up with.

Jimmy.
