My 2017 Ford Expedition has been parked in my garage a lot during the COVID pandemic since I am working from home exclusively. In fact, as of yesterday, I finally filled my fuel tank for the first time since the end of March - and even then still had a quarter of a tank of fuel left. But - interestingly, while parked and on this one tank of fuel, I supposedly drove 3260 miles according to my trip mileage, in a 102:23:42 timeframe - and added an additional approximately 3260 miles to the odometer while parked. ??? I had the oil changed at the end of March also - and the mileage from the oil change to today (on this same one tank of fuel) is approximately 3200 more miles. This is nearly the end of October - so it has set parked in my garage the majority of the time for 7 months. I have gone to the post office and to pick up curbside groceries only a few times times - and that is all. I am the only driver. Is this a known glitch in the computer? Or is this a scam by Ford to silently add a few miles every day so that the warranty expires quicker? I ALWAYS reset the trip every time I refill the gas tank. I refilled the tank yesterday, reset it to zero again and took pictures of the mileage when I pulled it back into the garage. I will not be going out for at least a week - so I will be taking more pictures of it as it sits. Any advice would be appreciated. At this rate, my warranty is being burned up from a car sitting parked! Has anyone ever heard of this happening? If you have a parked 2017 Expedition, would you please watch your mileage and see if you have something similar happening? Thank you!

Hi - I'm a single female - live alone. No pets, no kids, no one else. Just me and the Expedition parked in the garage that magically is adding mileage.

I'm beginning to think that! ;-) One day I went to the post office about 3 months ago - and noticed it had jumped up considerably then. So I'm thinking a hiccup - or else Casper knows how to tinker with a car computer!

Thank you very much. Interesting - an alternator ripple. Have never heard of that. Grew up helping my Dad repair vehicles - will look further into this. I appreciate it. Thank you!

The link indicates trouble codes being set. Have you tried to see if any codes have been set?

In case you don't have a code reader:

How To Read Ford Check Engine Light Without a Code Reader

  1. Press and hold the reset button for the odometer.
  2. Turn the key on to accessory.
  3. Keep holding the button until the words TEST appear.
  4. Once the words TEST appear let go of the odometer button and press it again to cycle through the onboard test.
  5. Push the button to dtc which will give an error codes.
Is your 2017 still under factory warranty? (I'm assuming not.)

Kidding aside, there are several things that can make it do that. It's probably under warranty; bring it to the dealer. They have heard of this before. Bring it to them to document the problem before this thing decides to rack up real miles and void your warranty. It's not a common problem but I have seen it happen.

Thank you very much, Don and Trainmaster. It has 57K on it - 54K before it jumped the additional 3K. I have an extended Ford PremiumCare warranty to 150K which I sure hope will cover this. I'll contact the dealer. Thank you!

I'm a PITA.
I'd demand they roll the miles back off of it!

I agree - I want my mileage back! Or - they need to extend the warranty by that amount and do something for the reduced value of the vehicle from the added miles.

Sorry Don - I see I missed your second message. I have not looked at the codes. My old code reader has died so I have another one ordered. Thanks for the info on how to look at it without a code reader! I learned something! Cool!
