My wife drives our 2017 Expy Ecoboost v-6, 48,000 miles. As I sometimes work at home, I can hear the car start from my office in the morning. Several times over the last few weeks, it was with a somewhat loud rattle-clunk noise that lasted about 1 second at first start up. It doesn’t happen every time, but often enough. I am afraid I already know what I am hearing, but can anyone paint a prettier picture for me than cam phaser/valve train issue?

Is it a short trip vehicle? Hopefully getting a complete service once a year, not by mileage. 2017, 9 years old hopefully 8 or 9 services. Short trips are extremely had on turbocharged engines.

Yes, she drives about 1 mile to work. I try to long haul it as much as I can, but I travel a lot by air, so it gets lots of short trips. Oil is changed frequently, coolant is serviced every 2 years, but not much more for service.
