So, I guess the dumb drivers here in Washington have thrown in the towel on their ability to cope with the little bit of snow and ice we actually get here (in Seattle at least). Thus, they've decided to begin salting the roads. On my way to work this morning I thought we had a dusting of snow, no, it was salt. They salted when it was perfectly dry, not moisture on the roads, and clear blue skies. This worries me.

I was amazed at how clean and rust free the underside of my expy is when I got it, now that they're salting, I fear it won't stay that way. How do I prevent my baby getting eaten away, short of not driving her at all?

Self-serve car washes. Spray down everything (undercarriage, inside fender walls, rockers) once a week during salting season. Even this won't stop it though, only slow it down.

The main reason I am so worried is because I have worked on vehicles from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, and Canada… And needless to say, I was not a fan of how difficult they were to work on, just because of the rust alone!

My entire adult life, I have not had to deal with driving in salt conditions… is there any kind of undercoating that I can have done on the vehicle being that it is this old?

salt in WA is nothing new, they have been using hot mix for years now which is salt and sand mix and i don't think the salt is anymore harmful than the deicer that they use it just cost less.

i hit the auto car wash every 2 weeks and more so with snow and ice more common. the under car spray does a decent job then in spring i use a pressure washer and really get it clean and hit any rust spots with a good bit of under coating

you just have to be vigilant about it and take care of it
