I'm trying to find a smooth riding shock for my 2000 expedition 4x4. I use for street use only. I bought motorcraft front shocks about 3 months back, and they suck. When the truck is cold their is some shock, but as soon as things warm up their terrible. I've got 74k on truck. It's hard to believe front torsion bars are causing this. Anybody had any luck with other shocks?

I'm going to go wth Bilsteins, probably 4600s. Maybe 5100s. Haven't decided yet. I want to do more tuning of the rest of the suspension before committing to new shocks. Right now it seems like the rears are the "limit straps" in the rear end.

If you search by my username, I posted a writeup on Bilsteins. They are still going strong after a couple years and I'm happy with my decision. Good luck!

I Use Monroe Sensatracs, and they are much better than my 150K factory shocks...

You might consider an air lift or similar system. Mine really helps the beast fell like its not bouncing all over the place

I have Rancho RS5000s. Seem fine to me.

I have these as well. They are a suitable replacement, but only went with them for a cheaper alternative (and the lifetime warranty).

Would go with something different next time (or when funds become available).

Well guys I changed the front shocks on my 2000 expy 4x4. Put on bilsteins, took off the 5 month old ford Motorsport shocks. Definitely a better ride over bumps. It's got that nice 4 x4 bounce back. Gonna throw the rears on later when it also will need brakes. Definitely recommend these to those in need of shocks. Man what a disappointment Ford shocks were. They basically went away when warm, not so with Bilsteins. Just thought you guys wanted to hear the update. Thanks all, Moose.

I agree, just changing the fronts made a big difference. Can't wait to install rears. Leave it to the Germans to make an American truck behave like Ford should have. Wish I would have put these on first , would have saved my extra labor and time.

Well guess what guys, new bilsteins rode great for first hour but after driving Friday night for 6 plus hours riding the kids here in San Francisco for Lyft, the shocks feel just like the old ones. All the rebound damping and cushion just disappears. I feel this front and rear. I've only changed the front so far. I called the guy that sold them, he thinks it's the control arm bushings. Truck is 4x4 year 2000 expy. Anyone else have this kinda ride problem? Tires are street 285/50r20 Nankang. Tire pressure is 38psi any help out there? Moose.

Just my 2 cents.........

I think your tires are aiding in the problem. A 285/50-20 is going to be a very hard riding tire. Add to that the massive amount of weight on the front end of your expy and you have a recipie perfect for overworking the valving on the shocks.

Has the truck been lifted/leveled at all to accomodate the 20's? If it has, you may want to look into the 5100 series Bilsteins instead of the 4600's. With the 285/50-20's only being 31.2" I know the truck may NOT have been leveled

The tires aren't helping matters. But short of changing rims I'm kinda stuck there. I checked and 4600's are the only ones available for my 4x4. The weird thing it only rides rough when hot. It's fine the first hour or so. I'm thinking the torsion bars and springs are a big part of equation. Oh well I've had worse riding cars in my past.
