I am not familiar with the theory of operation.

Is it an electric actuator that pumps the hydraulic piston in the rear? Or is it a completely separate system?

I haven't looked into it, but if it's anything like so many other vehicles, it's a completely separate set of shoes that press outward on the inside of the disks drum. In many cars its simply cable activated which to me means this is simply an actuator that pulls the cable instead of a manual mechanical pull from inside the cabin. But again, I haven't really looked into these, but very few leverage the same caliper used for normal braking.
