Hello Everyone!

I have a 99 Expedition Eddie Bauer 4x4 5.4 L. I don't know much about mechanical issues, just a little. I was hoping someone on here can help me! I have had 2 people tell me its the fuel pump, but I feel like it could be something else, and I don't have money to burn while troubleshooting.

My truck is cranking, but not turning over. It started about 2 months ago when I was driving on a long road trip. I stopped off for a bite to eat and when I restarted the truck it was acting like it wouldn't idle properly and was weak. After that, it continually got worse. It got to the point where it would take 2-3 minutes to get it to start in the morning. Usually it would be okay for the rest of the day, but the problem would not be limited to mornings only.

I replaced the fuel pressure regulator. I thought it fixed the problem, but now I have to step on the gas pedal to keep the truck idling.

I got a second opinion and he said something about not hearing the fuel pump and having to turn the key on and off until you hear it and then hit the gas pedal to keep it idling.

Also, sometimes I hear a weird buzz/humming sound coming from the front right side of the truck. Sometimes when its not even on? I read this is a PCM or something.... I don't know.

The guy said something about 12 volts and its not getting the pump to turn on and to turn the key until I hear it engage... So how does this mean its a fuel pump? It seems like something else would cause this issue!?

Thanks to anyone who can help me, just don't want to get ripped off!

Also, what part should I buy and where? It seems like there are many differnt fuel pumps!!!

How many miles are on the expy??
One thing you could do is to get a can of Carb. Cleaner and have someone spray a little into the intake while you try to start the engine If it fires right up then I would suspect the fuel pump needs to be replaced. ONLY SPRAY IN SHORT SHOTS
E-Bay or RockAuto is a good place for parts
DELPHI Part # HP10087 from rockauto about $191.00

It has 115,000 miles.

Thanks for the part info!

I have the spray. I may have sprayed too much in it, but I will be sure not to do that again!

It doesn't take much spray Just be careful

Also I looked on e-bay for the fuel pump There was one seller that had the pump for $99.00 which is the best price around as that pump cost me about $160.00 about six months ago

you also could check at the fuel cutoff switch to see if you are getting full voltage to the fuel pump. You have to be looking at the voltage (12 volts) when you first try to start as the voltage will drop off it the engine doesn't start

Thanks so much for the help!

It's strange because today the truck is running fine, like there's nothing wrong with it all of a sudden. I just turn the key to the on position for a second and THEN try to start it, and it starts right up!

Weird!

Do you think I should still replace the pump?

Have you ever changed the fuel filter? If not change it.

With the amount of mileage you have on the expy I would be ready to replace the pump.

Couple of things, before you get the pump replaced, you should consider having the pressure checked on the system. if this problem is predictable enough, you can check the current being drawn by the pump with an amp meter. roxy or myself can look in the factory service manual to check if it lists the spec for current draw. as far as hearing the pump run, my expy has yet to have the fuel pump loud enough that I can hear it run. which, personally, is odd but I have had no fuel related no-start conditions out of a near 300k mile truck.

No, not yet. Check the fuel pump relay. I've seen misdiagnosed fuel pumps almost changed just for a bad fuel pump relay. It's easy to change and cheaper. You should be able to swap it with another relay of the same type preferable the horn's or something similar that you can still drive without just to try it out. If it works, go take the relay to an auto store and get a new one. They are around $15. There will be a box in your engine compartment with the relays in it and under the box cover it will show you which relays are where.

I just had a fuel pump go out. It took a while to go out and I did regularly have pretty low fuel which I think contributed to the pump failure. I ended up spending the diagnostic fee and had the entire pump assembly replaced because they have to install the pump into the assembly and that takes time which you might as well just do the assembly for around $300. Mine would cut out at the most random times.

The cost at a mechanic would be around $600 either way, if you do the assembly or not in addition to the diagnostic fee. You could spend a hundred to possibly save 500 or diagnose it your self but the pump was only confirmed when it had completely failed. Starting fine and there is nothing to identify. you could to get some more exact directions on testing relays and fuses and everything. MY 2 cents. I think is fuse number 10.
