I am looking for a roof "box" for our travels.. I am looking at these online because no local stores carry these in stock. My problem is that I am looking at the prices being around $500.00 for a "pvc" box and wondering if these things are going to last??? Does anyone have one and is it going to last? I have 3 little girls and my wife who tends to load the truck up for a simple overnight so I desperatly need more cargo room...

Just an idea here, how about a hitch mounted carrier and waterproof bag combo. I purchased this combination and used it for our 4000 mi round trip during the thanksgiving holiday. The carrier measures 60"x20" and holds 500 lbs. The waterproof bag from Highland really swallows gear and attaches directly to the carrier via d rings. We had 2 large suitcases full of adult clothes, 2 smaller bags with the girls clothes, 3 backpacks and one misc bag stuffed in/on the carrier. Walmart had the carrier for 50 bucks and I used Amazon for the bag at 40. Less than 100 beans for alot more storage. Not to mention what can be saved in fuel mileage not having the roof carrier catching all the air. Just a thought...

i have one of those expandable roof toppers from walmart and at first it was ok it has a smooth inside some kinda waterproofing plastic or something well it didnt hold up too well the outside is good and will still hold gear but damn that inside plastic stuff is flaking off like crazy and gets all over your crap. not to mention most the straps broke so i just used ratchet straps to hold it down i have the tan version of this one

Here's the hitch cargo carrier I purchased.

The waterproof bag, also from Highland, is in the "Frequently Bought Together" section of the page. And YES, it is truely waterproof as we ran in heavy downpours on the way home from our trip.

I've got a thule roof box they work great for holding alot of crap. of course now I can't really use it with the cargo basket up there. I've thrown ski's and boards in it and no problems.

We have some in our fleet of rental cars since gm don't make mini vas anymore and so far they are holding up well (even tho its one of the stupidest things to have in a rental fleet when luggage bags are so heavy) and so they are holting up well.

So to maintain the good looks of my Expy anyone know where I could look to see pics of these cargo boxes on an expedition?

I had this for mine and my only complaint was that some hotel parking garages only fit up to 7ft clearance and I would freak out that I was going to hit. Great for the weather and sand from the beach. I even got it to fit my Saturn Vue.
