Just resurrecting this thread to provide an update.
My previous issues were with the tires.
When I brought the truck home, they were mismatched and bald(ish), so I threw on a set of Hercules tires that had good tread. It got me by, but traction was still bad.
This winter I bought a set of the Michelin Defender LTX tires and, while not a true snow tire, the traction is so much improved. No concerns taking it anywhere now.
Just goes to show if you want to have good grip, it starts with good shoes.
