turn signal lights

OK I have a 2003 XLT. My wife tells me the other day that the driver side rear turn signal isn't working. I pull the signal lens piece off and it starts working. It does it again a few days later, and the same thing. After pulling the red. plastic lens off, it starts working. We buy new bulbs and same thing happens again. Now the funny thing is, even with new bulbs, when put in reverse the bulb lights up. The blinker or brake light won't come on but the reverse light works. I hope someone else has had this. Thanks

Well, noone has responded to the post but I figured I would tell what happened. We took it to the dealership and they replaced the bulbs too. Everything seems to be working fine now. I just can't figure out why when I replaced the bulb myself, it didn't work.
