i searched the forum and didn't really find what i was looking for so.... i (apparently) didn't tighten the lug nuts to spec on the driver front (not sure how i missed this one wheel, but I did) and snapped two studs and lost two lug nuts.

1) other than OEM...anyone replace with other brands and what would they be?

2) what lug nuts can you order? I've checked Amazon and they have all different sorts...

advice? i have the Lisle tool coming to set back in... and banging out... but wanted help on the studs and the lug nuts...

thanks all!!!

They are a chrome capped nut. They have a stainless steel sheet metal cover. They are $5 or $6 each at the dealer. I've got a couple of extra around here if you want them just pay the shipping and you can have them.

If you look at post #2 the price was $5.69 each for the studs but you have to buy a pack of 5. The price your dealer has is probably for the pack of 5.

I have extra capped nuts if you want them.

Lug nut torque is 150 lb-ft. My torque wrenches only go to 100.

-- Chuck

150 ftlbs is (literally) a 150lb man putting all his weight on the end of 12" breaker bar.... or a 200lb man leaning in a little short of full force, or full weight but 3" from the tip of the bar

Etc.

Although personally Im more of a fan of pulling up than pushing down, but thats harder to eyeball (and you have to take care to not lift a car off a jack stand)....

dont worry about exact torque TOO much, though, since any shop you'll ever take it to will just eyeball it with an impact driver anyway... just dont go torquing it down to half or double the recommended value

Oh and remember to tighten nuts in a star pattern, twice (first pass most of the way, second pass torque it down)...well a double jewish star when it comes to trucks I guess

The tire shops around here use torque wrenches. I've watched them do it to my truck and other vehicles in the bay. I didn't even have to ask them.

I bought the OEM chrome mirror caps from them and saved almost $60 over what my local dealer wanted for them.

Indiana clearly has a different work ethic... round here its two blasts with an impact per lug nut, rattle once first pass, rattle twice second pass, done.

Do they just check it with a torque wrench, or actually just use hand tools to do lug nuts???

Even though Fort Wayne is the second largest city in Indiana, it still has the small town mentality. I've seen them use the impact to seat the lug nuts and then a couple of pumps on the torque wrench to set the torque and I have seen them drive them on with the impact and then put the torque wrench on to set the torque. Most of the guns that I witnessed were set lower than the torque setting. (I could tell by how much the torque wrench moved - it wasn't just click and stop.)

i agree most shops eyeball and send you on your way. Never had an issue as long as they don’t leave any loose.

I need to grab a few of the chrome plated lug nuts when i brought my truck in for the alignment and stuff i got it back with three of my lug nuts where they bashed and removed the chrome plating off of them. (The chrome lug nuts kind of suck because the plating tends to bind and dent and not allow your wrenches to fit over the lug nut). Luckily unlike studs lug nuts are dirt cheap lol. My problem is only $6

The biggest issue with those are they are just like the factory lug nuts. They have the stainless steel caps on them that get bent up the more they are taken off and put back on. I bought these which are actually chrome plated.

My issue with those is i can replace the factory style lug nuts 3 times over for the price of one of those. $40 for 24 OEMs vs $104 for 24 of those.

I'm a torque wrench guy but did resort to the "stand on the handle" technique putting the rear wheels back on the Expedition after I put on mud flaps. Pull is what the instructions on mine state. Less likely to overtorque is my guess as it seems easier to stop pulling than pushing where you're probably putting body weight on it.

My S2000 wheels get the full digital torque (as does every bolt on the car). Same with the travel trailer lug nuts (and tire pressures) which are checked every weekend the trailer moves.. Trailer wheels are notorious for loosening on the road when new. Mine were loose sitting on the dealer's lot as the trailer was delivered on its own wheels and not on a lowboy.
