I have the above expedition with 185,000 on the odometer. Ford replaced transmission and transfer case at 100,000. I know at some point down the road I will overhaul/replace the engine. I am leaning toward a Ford crate motor as I have had zero issues with this beast. Best motor I have ever been behind. I have experience with gm everything from their v6 to 400 cu. and even older fords the 351 Cleveland and Winsdor. I even played with some British stuff like Triumph straight 6 and Jaguar's v12.

Any thought. I know I want to leave it normally aspirated and it will be a daily driver as it has been for the last 14 years.

Thanks.

All depends what comes out of the crate. If it is a 3v 5.4 with the variable cam timing, I would avoid that like the plague since those cam phasers fail after 60-100k and cause problems. The older motors will run forever though. 235k on mine, 260k on my aunt's 98 expy (both 5.4's), and just over 200k on my dad's 4.6. Our 04 didn't make it to 160k before needing to be completely rebuilt.

I would go with the 2v PI head motor. I prefer the simplicity of the 2 valve motors as well as the better spark plug design.
If you wanted to get ambitious, you could go with some aftermarket cams and gain a little performance. But all in all, the 5.4 motors are pretty rock solid. Mine has 200k on it and still runs like a champ.

I will definitely stick with the 2v. My motor has been great.

X2 on the 2v

don't worry about a crate motor. rebuild your 5.4l or buy one from a junkyard. or buy a big bore block that's worth extra 35 horses right there. if you stick with a factory 5.4l have your heads ported little they need the extra air flow, headers, different cam grind and a bigger throttle body is all you need for those engines. just the basic H/C/I mods.
don't expect to make 400HP under 5kRPM with this engine for a heavy vehicle unless you're rocking a 2 wd, but for under 3k you rebuild it with the mention mods I provided and stock injectors will be fine. do this you'll be happy.

Thanks for the input. If I go with a different cam, do I have to program the computer?

hmm I build engines but I don't tune computers, my tuner guy says when ever I install new cams he always tunes the computer. I think it would be a good idea myself.
