The cost to rework the Ford 6 speeds should come down, too much $$ when compared to competitors with the same ZF licensed 6 speed. The GM unit is a lot less $$ to overhaul and it’s basically the same thing.

I remember when I owned a Chrysler 300. A year after the warranty ran out the engine and transmission died at the same time. I still had 2 years left on the note and I had switched jobs and was making a lot less money. I called up the finance company and told them to come pick it up. That killed my credit for 7 years. I'll never buy a mopar ever again.

It is very unusual for the engine and transmission to fail simultaneously - what happened to each?
I don't remember exactly. It was 9 years ago. My wife works at a mechanic shop and they diagnosed it. I remember the 300 smoking like a train from the 1800's and it not shifting right. I think I owed $10k and it needed $5k worth of work. Regardless, I decided at the time that it wasn't worth it. That's when I found my first expy for short money and instantly fell in love.

That sucks. It would probably be my last Ford if the trans died at 85K and I had no warranty.
Exactly why I chose to go find a clean low mile 03 when I bought my Navigator.
Not going with 3v or the 6sp trans when the other parts are so plentiful and cheaper.
You should still be able to get a plenty of trans that will fit yours in salvage yards or pick and pay lots.
I will NEVER pay to have a trans rebuilt or replaced UNLESS I pull it out and have a friend or someone who I trust who is cheap enough to rebuild it then put it back in myself.
The most cost effective way is to get a junk yard used good used one and swap it your self or even pay someone to swap if you can not.
This keeps the price decently down there.
A 5000 repair is not going to happen to any of my vehicles.
Better off to sell it or trade it in(which is evil too) but if you do the math ..... you would more than likely come out better in what you have in it and what it is worth than if you put 5k into fixing it.
I see you are in Houston. Should be TONS of people there wrenching on cars from craigslist and marketplace.
Find someone you know who has had good experiences with someone on the side and go buy a replacement trans (make sure it is right one 4wd, year period etc) and put it in the rear and tow it to him to swap.
Going rate on swapping a trans is 300-600. Only shops get into the 700-1200 labor range because they are crooks, ahem, greedy, ahem, because they can get by with it.....

The chances of the 6R80 breaking are still slimmer than the old 4 speed overall since it’s a lot more robust and band-less with less to go wrong. I thoroughly enjoy the 5.4 3V Triton/ 6R80 combo. The 6 speed woke this engine up over previous. Here is a Ford F-150 test run with the 4.6L 2V/4R70 vs 4.6 3V/6R80 on their test track.

Horrible news 5x10......I'm assuming you mean the input shaft. That truly sucks but I think you just got your turn to be "that guy". The guy who gets a broken part that hardly no one ever gets. I would explore all options before making a decision IF you like your truck. If you don't, it's the perfect excuse to get rid of it. My '17(same as yours) just rolled past 85K, time will tell if I join you.
Sucks as this time of year for a lot of folks, even if it isn't a $$ issues, it's still a pita dealing with having to replace a vehicle during the holidays.

I’m gonna keep it, $5k is a lot cheaper than the alternative of swapping vehicles out
Probably $20k+ difference in moving to a newer model(2018 expy) or to another brand
