Had a problem crop up with my 1997 XLT, 231k mi. Was driving about 70mph and started to feel a vibration, like a wheel was out of balance. Got progressively worse where it turned into a severe shimmy in the front end. Stopped for a little bit, started again and the problem vanished. A few more miles and it came back. This repeated over several cycles until I got home. Was in 2H mode the entire time.
It seems as if the front wheels are getting engaged in drive mode and it feels like turning on dry pavement in 4WD mode. Kind of like the front wheels are fighting each other.
Its been some time since replacing fluids in the transfer case for front differential. Was going to start with that this weekend.
Any other advice or suggestions?
