Hard Steering

I have an 07 with almost 67,000 miles on it. In the last few weeks the steering has gotten hard. I did a little research and found that the u-joints in the lower steering shaft get stiff. I sprayed them with some WD-40 and the steering got easier. Has anyone had any luck pulling the shaft out and cleaning the bearings? if not is there a place to get a replacement that is better than the dealer's? I'm guessing that spraying the bearings down will get old.
