Anyone no any quick cheap and fairly easy ways to increase gas mileage and horsepower gain without having to reprogram everything or bust the bank. I don't want much just a little better throttle response and mpg. I have a 98 5.4 expy.

May not be so cheap unless you find a used one, but an intake helped my Expy out on the throttle response. Not much on the mileage wise but have notice a little bit.

the basics. intake, gotts mod or cai. exhuast. new muffler, bigger piping, or true duals. programmer, people like the edge, i loved mine i just lost mpg so my buddy has it for now, and then e-fans. dual 16s. that will increase your power and mpg by a few. not much you can do besides that.

Might be a stupid question but what exactly is a gotts mod?? This is my first expy and ford for that matter. Not real familiar with fords power upgrades.

Hi Tommy695,
Basically if you increase power (fuel consumption) you sacrifice economy (mileage). A cheap way is to increase HP for example: the standard rail pressure from 43.5psi to 60psi, this will increase the flow rate of your standard 19lbs injectors to 23lbs which is roughly between 25 to 45hp increase, without changing out injectors.
The stock fuel pressure regulator can usually handle up to 100 psi of fuel pressure so anything above 100 psi would become a problem. Fortunately, the fuel lines on an EFI equipped engine can safely withstand pressures of over 100 psi so there will be no need to replace them; but they should be checked for weaknesses. Secondly, and more importantly, the stock fuel injector will only operate correctly at up to 60 psi. Once the fuel pressure rises above 60 psi, the longevity of the injector will be greatly reduced. In addition, injector control will become quite erratic once the fuel pressure rises above 70 psi.
However, in order to increase rail pressure you do have to change out your fuel regulator for an aftermarket piece (probably 100$), as long as you dont exceed the max rating on your fuel pump you should be fine. But like anything mechanical, at full throttle for a long time and it wears out quicker. you should consider installing a fully programmable aftermarket ECU that will allow you to program the ECU for the correct fuel delivery at different boost pressures and throttle positions.
As far as EFI, it is controled by the ECU for A/F mixture, be sure to have the ECU reset after any modification at your local dealer ship (or buddy) who knows how, then you should be fine.
Hope this helps.
ps: You also might want to get a hotter coil (C.O.P.s coil over plugs) from standard 12K volts to aftermarket 50K to 80K volts, for hotter spark which inturn burns fuel more efficiently and gives a much crisper throttle response (and you might think about plug wires that can handle hotter spark as well, MDS, ACCEL..etc). Simple K&N in the front and any after market exhuast flowing at least 1.5 more out the back to match whats going on internally.

to get better mpg and free up HP you have to reduce load and/or increase efficiency. electric fans, better aerodynamics, and tires made for effeciency will all help. some programmers may help mpg and HP if done right. Other than that if you want good mileage get a Fiesta.

I didnt want to sound like a history lesson or lecture about the previous answer, just trying to help. As I was saying before, and caro's98eb was saying is basically "efficiency" (ie...less weight, less drag, better fuel burn, tire size and type, gear changes...etc), the better you make it run with minor changes you will achieve your goal without braking the bank.
I know you said you dont want to re-program, however, there are options for pre-programed plug-and-play utilities from JET it can be found at http://www.jetchip.com/JET_Chips_Modules.asp
You plug it in, it bypasses original programming as long as it is plugged in and if you want to return to factory, just unplug. Hope this helps

I disagree that increasing fuel pressure will increase hp 25-45 hp. The stock ecu is set up to run a 12.5-13 afr at wot which is ideal for power. Approximately 14.7 to 1 at all other times once in close loop mode. This is ideal for emissions as it gives you the most complete burn. It would run pig rich with as much increase in fuel pressure mentioned reducing power. Plus anything you do with fuel pressure would only be temporary until the ecu adjust base on its o2 readings. Though that much of an increase would likely set a code.

My set up with my blower I shoot for 11.7 to 1 ratio for safety (wot). It actually runs stronger leaner though. This is set up via the maf transfer function table in the ecu... and a wideband. It has a relatively narrow sweet spot it needs to be or it runs poorly and or risk damage.
