My 2001 XLT needs a fuel pump. DOn't really want to spend $200 on it and I can't drop the tank where the truck sits now. And i would need a tow truck to move it to a dry spot.

So, can I just put a cheap inline pump behind the fuel filter and hot wire it?

What kind should i get? What else do i need ot know for this to work?

Here is something to think about....
do you think you can pull the gas through a non operating fuel pump?
If you cut the nylon fuel line, you should check the pricing of the repair parts or new line.
Doing it the right way is usually more cost effective in the long run.

dunno. but $200 for the pump plus $150 for the tow truck, yes, really, i don't know anyone with 4wd who could yank it from the bog it's sitting in.

versus $30 for a pump that might get the truck out on it;s own power.

I do hope it will pull though the bad pump.

Good luck with that and let us know how it goes.
How far do you need to move it?
You can supply fuel to the fuel rail through the schrader valve used for checking the fuel pressure. Only trouble is it will be unregulated.

you're gonna replace the fuel pump anyway right? why not find a way to get the replacement fuel pump to supply fuel to the engine temporarily while you move it, you may have to sacrifice a gas can to get it to fit. but itll supply pressure

To backtrack a bit, you are sure that the pump is getting power, correct?
A bad fuel pump relay or tripped inertia switch (or even a blown fuse) can make it seem like the pump is dead.

Yeah, I was really hoping for an electrical solution. I traced everything back to the iniertia switch.

I could hear faint noise in the tank.

Opened the fuel line behind the fuel filter (still hoping)
