Change mess

Guys,

Did my 1st change on my 2011. Drained fine, all looked good. Replaced plug, then 10 minutes later there is a big spill of old oil on the floor (no I did not spill the collection pan...this time). Seems when I pulled the filter, the oil ran backwards from the filter mount instead of down the spill spout mounted on the frame and collected in the splash guard, then deposited on the floor. Nice feature of the new filter placement. Any remedy out there, short of standing the thing on the nose to change the filter?
