speedo meter problem in dash

I've got a problem with my odometer, if thats what you call it in the US.
It's the milagecounter and the tripcounter that wont work.

Before I disassemble everything I would like to know more.

Has anyone had any troubles with this?
Is it a mechanical thing or is the dash electronic??

from what i understand its a pretty common problem..... mine in my 99 xlt works fine with 154k on it but my 99 eb with 135 comes and goes as it pleases..... not a big enuf deal to me to pull it all apart just yet.... altho if i do pull it apart, it gives me a good reason to install aftermarket gauge faces.....
