Transmission problem with 1998 Expedition

Hi there,
I have a 1998 Expedition rear wheel drive that has never ever given me any major trouble. All of a sudden the transmission has begun slipping but only when the car has been running for about 10 minutes.
Any ideas as to whether a simple transmission tune up may solve the problem? My mechanic tells me the transmission is gone and I need to either replace it or rebuild it, both options are really expensive.

anyone that says the transmission is gone without pulling the pan needs to be kicked in the junk...

ok with that said the pan needs to be pulled to see if you have any brass shavings

any metal is bad but brass is really bad...

what does the fluid look/ smell like?

Go to your local salvage and get a tranny or craigslist and type "PartingOut" whatever vehicle your searching for. You can also look up Monstertrans.com for a very good rebuild kit.
