The tag inside the door frame says I have a 'W' but my owners manual says that is a 5 speed manual and I have an automatic with O/D. Any ways to determine what I have before I go and change fluid and filter? 04 with 5.4L. Thanks for your help.

theres only 1 tranny option from ford. so if you to the auto parts store they can only give you one... 2. 4x4 or 2wd. thats the only difference. you tell them what you have and theyll give you the right filter and gasket.

right off wiki
MY2003–2004 4-speed 4R70W automatic
MY2005–2006 4-speed 4R75E automatic

you have the 4R70W cause you have the 2v 5.4. if you have the few 04s that have the 3v 5.4 then you have the 4R75E. so how many valves does your engine have? 2 or 3. cause that will tell you what tranny you have.

Thought it was determined by the number of bolts holding the pan?

number of bolts and the shape of the pan.. don't know if on the 2nd gen they offer a deep and shallow pan

either way it should be the 4R70W

A few got the 4R100. IIRC, any 03/04 (and maybe 05/06) Expos sold in Californa were suppossed to come with the 4R100. Heard of at least one person on the other forum who got a brand new tranny for free because his Expo had a 4R70W and was originally sold in Cali so Ford had to make it correct.

But yes the vast VAST majority got the 4R70W/75E which is fine as they are rated for over 500ft lbs and are actually lighter and rob less power than the bigger 4R100.

You mean R470W right? There is a 4R75E that went in the 2005+ models. Towing package has nothing to do with the tranny, it involves other stuff. The 4R70W is pretty stout regardless although I will be upgrading to the 4R75E when/if my stocker blows because it is simple, cheap and it is a smoother shifting unit.

No, I meant 4R75W -- there are many posts out there that verify this. For a while at least in 2004, Expeditions got the 4r75w

Its possible that some folks have it and don't even know it. It looks pretty much like the 4r70w.

Apparently, the 4r75w and 4r75e are very similar, with the only difference being that there is an output shaft sensor on the E version that allows the PCM (computer) to detect torque convertor slip. In 2005, from what I read, most cars and trucks had computers that started to take advantage of that information in some fashion. You can use a E tranny in an older vehicle that had a W, but not the otherway around.
