Question has any 1st gen owner tried swapping the rims for 4th gen. I understand the hub most likely has to be replaced 5 lug for 6 lug but is it that simple.

It's the whole spindle, brakes, ABS speed sensor assembly has to be changed. Probably cheaper and easier to go buy a Gen4 with the rims you want on it ....
