I am sure this is not the first time you all have seen this question and probably wont be the last. I searched the first 9 or so pages and clicked on all the links that seemed like my issue but to no avail. I think posting here may be premature since I have yet to have the codes pulled (if there are any) but here goes.

I just purchased (2 days ago) a 2006 Expedition XLT 5.4L with 62,000 miles on it. I still have not signed all of the final papers on this truck and can still return it (I think) with no fees or anything. The gas light was on when we first got into the truck so we took it to the next gas station and filled it with the cheap stuff (this was my first heart attack as the pump turned off at 90 dollars even and the tank was still not completely full)

Driving around town like any person would the truck was fine and we were very excited to get this vehicle with this low of miles on it. When we got to the Highway I floored the gas pedal and the vehicle acted like it was low on fuel. My first thought was maybe we got bad gas, or maybe there was an issue since the vehicle was almost empty when we got it. We decided to continue our 70 mile trip anyway since it was only acting up under heavy load. After two days we are only down to about half a tank (so maybe 150 miles of driving) and I am still having the same issue but also saw the check enging light blink at me for about 20 seconds for the first time today. When you try to "get on it" it studders/surges like it is fuel starved. I haven't tried to see if I keep my foot in the pedal if it goes away at higher RPM because I don't want any further issues to arise.

I am going to Autozone to see if there are any stored codes even though the check engine light is not constant. I know that will shed much more light on the issue but I see this issue comes up quite a bit and wanted to ask if anyone might have a quick idea to an easy fix. I understand that you cannot possibly sit at your computer and fix my vehicle for me, but I also know that I am not the first person to have this problem and maybe someone has knowledge about this particular issue.

So far I have not done anything as I wasn't exactly worried about it until today when the light flashed at me. I figured I had bad fuel and would use 93 octane at next fill up to see if the problem goes away or not.

Thanks for looking at my post either way and I will update this tomorrow once I have the codes pulled.

Best place to start is plugs and COP's. Usually hesitations under load can be traced to these. You will have a stored code that will give you one problem cylinder, but it wouldn't hurt to do all 8.

Higher octane will make no difference. The truck is designed to run on 87, and there is no benefit to running higher than that. All the higher stuff does is allow for a higher compression ratio (among other things) in a performance engine.

Look at the fuel filter too. Since you don't know what's been put in the fuel tank in the past that's a good place to start as well. You describe it as "Like it's fuel starved..." and at full throttle it very well may be, with a clogged fuel filter. But there may be some codes stored that'll give you some other areas to look at too.

Fuel Filter: Motorcraft FG986B .....

Fuel filter is behind a small plastic shield along the fuel tank.... push the blue buttons to release the line from the filter.

All the above and maf, air cleaner, pcv....sometimes its a combination of the little things that add up.

Fuel filter is the first thing I would do! They are only about $10 and that is really cheap piece of mind...
Also, the fuel may not be the issue. How does the air filter look? If the air filter is clogged you could be starving for air at WOT.
Ok, fuel filter would be second. Check the air filter first. That is a free check. LOL

When the CEL light flashes at full throttle and the truck bucks or loses power, it is misfiring. Pull the codes and I'm sure you will have a a P030X, with the X showing which cylinder is missing. Replace that COP and plug, and you should be good to go.

Filter is brand new! But I did see a vacuum nipple that doesn't have a hose attached. Anyone know if this should have a hose running to it?jehuta8y.jpg

Can you give a reference location? It's hard to make out where it's at in the engine compartment.

That just looks like your hot water control valve. No nothing goes on that stem. There is just the one vacuum line connected to the end that you see connected in the picture.
