So lately I've noticed between shifting from 3rd to 4th at around 40-50mph I get a slight shudder. Almost like rumble strips at least that's how other people have described it. Anyone else have this issue. Would a simple fluid and filter change help? Money is right right now a new trans would have to wait. Usually shifts fine but I sometimes get a weird shift from 3rd to 4th as well. Usually when i let off the gas it feels like it pops into 4th but not a major jolt.

Torque converter shutter. You can change the fluid and they possibly will work, if not try an additive for converter shutter. Just do your research on which one you want to use. I've heard Doctor Trans is good but haven't used it myself.

change out the fluid and filter and put the proper fluid in it don't use an additive for the friction just use Mercon 5 like it requires

I tried the additive route first...didn't work for me. Changed filter, put mercon V back in it, and that did the trick. Can hardly feel the shifts now.

experienced this today. except it happened in third (od off) while climbing a hill at about 55-60 also, there is a notable clunk feeling from what feels like the tcc unlocking in 4th.

1997 xlt at 275k I'll look into the filter/fluid. might do it Sunday but nervous as most trans fluid changes usually end up being the end of the tranny :/

How many miles? When was last trans service/flush?
Does it do the same thing if you manually shift her?

++ on Mercon V.

Do you tow? If so, highly-recommend changing every 25K and using the Blue Oval filter, my last one was: Ford YC3Z7A098BA

I just turned over 101k. Previous owner inherited from family member so he wasn't sure when last flush was done. Haven't done any towing don't have any extra money to be able to tow anything haha! Haven't tried the manual shifting yet but I will give it a try. Thanks!

My truck started slipping going into first, prompting me to change the tranny filter and whatever fluid was in the pan. It had also been slipping when the torque converter locked up. Both problems disappeared, however, what I did also changed the chemical makeup of the fluid.
A few months later, the converter shudder got really bad. I added a tube of Dr Tranny instant shudder fix and the shudder was gone. Some of it returned, so a month later I added a second tube. I get a slight bump when the converter unlocks, but eveything else is silky smooth.

I'd try additive first because you don't wanna blow $100 on fluid if the tranny is going out anyway. It's not a permanent fix, though. Ford says that the shudder is caused by old fluid, so if the tranny turns out to be OK, you'll may want to change all of the fluid and the filter. I used Valvoline fluid, next time, it'll be Motorcraft.
The only exception is if the tranny is whining, then I think you should skip the additive and change the fluid and filter. Mine was whining before I did that, after that the whine and slipping in first gear were both totally gone.

I have a 4R70W, by the way, and it has over 200K on it.
