New to the forum here, trying to figure out which transmission I have. I have been searching and reading through a lot of posts but can't clarify which trans I have. I know it either the E4OD or the 4R100. Stealership tried to tell me I had a 4R70W and I laughed at them. I had a 99 explorer and a 2000 f150 that both had the 4R and I'm very familiar with that trans. Enough rambling... I just bought a very clean(zero rust), very well maintained(lots of paperwork) 97 Expedition XLT (build date 3/97)with 5.4 4x4 with 278,*** miles almost everything is original. Just want to figure out if there is a way to identify any differences between the two trans before I order any parts. I already know my torque converter is on its last leg so I'm going to be rebuilding the trans and replacing the converter come taxes or sooner if I can get the extra money together.

Also if anyone knows where to order a good torque converter that isn't going to break the bank that info would be great.

Check your trans code on the sticker.

The transmission codes are: for 1997

U — Automatic, 4 speed, 4R70W.
E — Automatic, 4 speed, E40D.

for 1998

Transmission Codes

U — Automatic AOD (Expedition/Navigator).
E — Automatic E4OD (Expedition/Navigator).

for 1999

Transmission Codes

U — Automatic (AOD)
E — Automatic (4R100

Yeah mine is code "E". I just wasn't sure when they swapped from E4OD to 4R100. I've read many misinformed things. Now to find a good torque converter and rebuild kit...

Do tell on where I may locate this :)

Sorry I'm a ********. I googled it and that's why the original question. In th trans explanation it says E4OD(4R100). That's why I had been confused for a bit. But thanks to your break down of explanation I believe mine is the E4OD

Does yours have the Factory Towing package installed? That is usually the difference from a model standpoint. If the ETIS says that it has the "towing package" you have to 4r100.

The Ford E4OD and 4R100 four-speed automatic transmissions were essentially the same transmission with different names. However, Ford slightly beefed up the 4R100’s internal components to solve some lingering performance issues with the E4OD. Ford also matched the 4R100 with larger diesel-powered engines. The E4OD replaced the venerable Ford C-6 automatic transmissions. Both the E4OD and 4R100 were electronically controlled, replacing the C6’s hydraulic-controlled transmission technology.

On etis it does say I have the heavy duty towing package. I knew I had the hitch just wasn't sure if it was factory or aftermarket. Is there any identifiers on the trans between E4OD and 4R100? I know I read something somewhere about the speed sensor being located in different locations on the trans or in the rear diff. My speed sensor is in he tail housing if that helps any...

re reading your post, you have a 1997 Expy, its the E40D, the 4r100 doesn't show up in Expys until 1999.

I read right past that.

Yeah that's what I was figuring. Any idea where I can get a good torque converter that won't kill me financially?

Yeah I looked into the rockauto one. Not sure how that shipping is going to work though. Guess I could find out when that time comes.

I know that the 4r100 was introduced in E Series Fords in 1997.

After 1998 they renamed the E04D the 4R100, and made relatively few changes. It did not appear in the entire Expedition line until 1999 (in 5.4s).

There are some models of 1998s that have the 4R100, most left the factory with the "towing" package. This does not mean that you have one if you have the towing package, but you could. If it is a late build, they switched the line over in 1998 during the model year. I am told there are 98s that have 4r100s that do not have the package, were built very late, and that ford stopped making the E04D, and then just switched everything over before the 99 model year. I have only read about this.

I know one of the main differences is the valve bodies. I will find out when I crack the trans open sometime in the future. Anyone ever use that rockauto option for the torque converter before? I can't really find any reviews on it.

That works for me. It will give me time to tear into the trans and rebuild it. Now to get some extra money together to move forward with this little project.
