New owner here for about a month. I’m having some issues with exterior smells entering the cabin quite easily and quickly.

Just for example. I’ll pass a house burning wood. I almost instantly smell wood smoke in the cabin.

And just today my wife was following me closely in our older diesel shop truck. She said she could smell the exhaust in the cabin.

You would think that these vehicles would scrub these smells with the cabin filter. Perhaps I’ll have to swap out the factory filter for an activated charcoal unit to see if that makes any difference.

It boggles my mind how quickly the smells enter the cabin.

Anyone else experience this?

I’m almost certain it has a cabin filter. From initial findings it’s just a plain paper element. I’m going to try and get an activated charcoal filter and see if I can can’t help reduce exterior smells from entering the cabin.

I've found it helps to put the hvac on recirculation mode, instead of drawing fresh air from the outside.

This is probably the answer. A filter won’t get out a stench, just particulate. The charcoal filter suggested might help a little bit it won’t be enough to not notice something that smells bad. We have chicken farms where I live and when I see one of those trucks I hit the recirculating button, no stench whatsoever. Usually it runs recirculat during the summer, only in rain or winter does mine opt for fresh air.

Speaking of recirc, is there a way to keep the recirc on? I have to keep turning it on over and over while heater is on. I tried holding button down; no change.

I am not aware of one but my wife would LOVE an answer to this question. She is convinced if recirculation is not on we're all actively inhaling cancer 100% of the time. She hates that I don't know how to keep it on when she's in the car. She will turn it on and then accuse me of turning it off...haha!

Did you read the vehicle owner’s manual on the HVAC to determine how to do this?

There are probably just as many carcinogens inside the car as outside. The off-gassing of flame retardants, plasticizers, vinyl, etc from the new vehicle components will get you with recirculation.

Puts you in a nice catch-22.

From the manual:

Recirculated air: Press to switch between outside air and recirculated air. The air currently in the passenger compartment recirculates. This may reduce the time needed to cool the interior (when used with A/C) and reduce unwanted odors from entering your vehicle.
Note: Recirculated air may turn off (or prevent you from switching on) in all air flow modes except MAX A/C to reduce the risk of fogging. Recirculation may also turn on and off in various air distribution control combinations during hot weather in order to improve cooling efficiency.

I have the same question on recirculation of air. It seems to stay on when cooling, but turns off when heating after a few minutes. Driving on Long Island on the LIE, you want to keep it on especially when there’s a lot of trucks on the road. You can smell the difference when it pulls “fresh air” into the cabin by the exhaust fumes. Is there a fix to have it stay on all the time?

I park mine in my garage with the windows open under a ceiling fan for this very reason. There's ridiculous amounts of Fumes in these new vehicles. I'm no safety freak, but I'm not volunteering for a chemical-$hitstorm. I'll gladly smell the farms and have less chemical air.

As George calin said, and scientists have discovered saliva causes stomach cancer, but only when swallowed in small quantities over a long period of time.
